Electric Fence Batteries?

Car battery would work but I've found leisure (caravan) batteries hold their charge longer and don't get effected by the cold as much during winter

You can use a car a battery but Leisure batteries are better for that purpose. Leisure batteries are designed to be discharged & re charged without the battery suffering the deterioration that happens to car batteries.

You CAN use a car battery and it will work, but they aren't designed to be discharged and charged again, so their lifespan as fence power is rather short. Leisure/marine battery however will be designed to be discharged completely and reused, so suit electric fencers better.
The bigger the amp, the longer the battery will last and more punch it will pack.

car battery, I have a couple that only last a week or 2 but one that lasts 6 weeks, so always make sure a spare is charged

This. I have 2 and keep one charged at all times. Each battery lasts approx. 10 days - 2 weeks and cost me a tenner each from the local scrapyard. They are still going strong a year later. The trick is to never let them fully discharge before recharging them.

I use a leisure battery and it can last over a month. I bought mine from battery mega store but they are crap! Crap warranty and service so no matter how appealing the price is, don't use them! One used once and faulted, the other has last less than 1 year.

Caravan shops are good value , a minimum of 85 Ah, bigger is better for duration. Just don't run it to low better to recharge regularly than risk damage to the battery. Even leisure batteries don't like to have more than 50% of there capacity removed.
A good option is to put a solar panel on to charge the battery, on a typical energiser a 10 watt works a teat.

I did have a leisure battery, needed charging every 3 weeks or so BUT it cost me £70 and i hadn`t had it long before some thieving low life scumbags nicked it.

So now i just have 2 cheap car batteries picked up through a guy locally who fixes cars. I have 1 on and 1 on charge/as a spare type thing, and only a tenner each.

My local garage gives me used car, batteries - get one from a diesel car if poss - they are heavier duty & tend to be replaced sooner so have more life. Current one I'm using lasts about a month btw charges.

One of the problems with having second hand car batteries is that they are expensive so must have been replaced for a good reason, i.r. the cells were breaking down & weren't holding charge. If the battery comes from a rightoff at a scrap yard it may be better quality.
