Electric fence energiser - flashing but not ticking?

Hi,

My electric fence energiser is flashing as normal, but not ticking, so it's not working properly. It's not the battery because I've charged that and checked.

It's a patriot p20 if that makes a difference

Any ideas on whats wrong with it are greatly appreciated!!

Mine only ticks if there is something shorting the wire somewhere otherwise it's silent

If it's silent I know all is well

Could yours be like that maybe or does it always tick?

It usually always ticks, and then the horses don't go near it, so I assumed thats when it was working?

It's definitely not working at the moment anyway, because one horse just had the tape in his mouth

Just disconnected it for the time-being, hope it's fixable

Is it earthed properly? You won't get anywhere near the zap you should unless the earth stake is in deep enough and its connected properly to the charger!

How far should the earth stake be in? Its in about 2ft

Could be something as simple as needing to renew the connection to the fence clips. If it's flashing then it's got power (obviously!)

I hate fence units, they cost an arm and a leg and always go wrong :-(

I have an elderly CP250.
This is currently 'clicking' but no pulse light and I'm a wuss as wont put my fingers on tape to check it out & have lost my line tester

All ideas please

If you hold a blade of grass and place it on the fence you should be able to feel the power, your fingers should tingle

Thanks, will try new clips. Honestly, this electric fence is a pain in the backside!!
