Electric fence help please!!

I hope someone can help?? I need to section my field in half and have bought a kit including an energiser. However there are no instructions included!

We have put the fence up - literally one strand of tape from one side to the other and attached to the post and rail fence by the fence post attachment included in the kit. The problem I have is that I can't seem to actually electify the fence. The energiser sits on the earth stake which is in damp ground and runs off 4 dry cell batteries. The light flashes when its switched on so we know its working. There are 2 wires - red with a clip on to attach to the tape and black with a crocodile clip on. I assume this needs to attach to the earth stake or am I doing this all wrong?? Help anyone please?!
 
Your is different to mine but it sounds as though you are doing it right. Red clip to the tape and black to the earth stake. Make sure there is no vegetation touching the tape and also that the tape isn't touching your wooden fencing. A fence tester is a cheap bit of kit to buy and will show you what power is going through the tape.
 
can you put a picture of the battery energiser set up on here? showing all clips and what they attach to.

you need a circuit of fencing so a continous loop, meaning you cant have a single strand

Thanks for your replies. There is nothing touching it at all and a fence tester showed nothing going through.

I'm back home now so will try and get some pics tomorrow. On previous yards they have been on there was just a single strand which was electrified so I was trying to recreate the same here?? Its a Fenceman DP350 energiser which runs on 4 dry cell batteries.
 
You don't need a loop of wire/rope/tape, because the circuit is completed through the earth when the horse touches the fence. It sounds like you haven't got any power coming out of the energiser - you either need a tester or you need to touch it yourself (not much fun). I would recommend a multi-meter and start by checking the batteries, then continue along to the clips then the tape.

hi,
the DP350 has its live terminal on the very top . There is a red knob on the top with a metal plate under it unscrew it and put the red croc clip wire on the stud, that should give you a live connection.
The earth stake id usually a golden colour which is attached to the back of the unit by a metal bar. This is already connected to the earth terminal there is no real need to connect any other wire. The on off is a rotary knob ( sure you have worked that out ) turn it so it flashes about once a second. That should now work .
Note the DP350 when running of D cells produces 50 % of the power it does when running of a 12v battery. For a 200 meter roll of tape is will be fine. Also you MUST remove the 6v batteries before you attach it to a 12v battery, if you don't you will break it.

Thanks again for your replies. Nick - that is really helpful and shows that I have been doing it right by the sounds of it. We have approx 100m of tape and thats interesting to know about the power output. Are you saying we don't need to connect the black lead which goes into the back to the brass coloured earth stick? The energiser seems to just sit on this and we pushed the triangular part right into the ground.

Hopefully its just something simple like duff batteries!
