electric fence help

Hi. What is the most powerful electric fence you can use for horses? Have a very naughty pony! Also what do you need? Getting a bit confused with what all the parts are. Many thanks! :)
 
You need a rod and a battery. I use a 12 v car battery that last a long time till you have to charge. If you ask at a good horse shop that sells electric fence they will help and advice you.
 
What is the length of fencing that you want to put up and is there an existing post-and-rail fencing or anything like that already? Do you have mains or will it have to run off a battery?

The most powerful battery unit that I know of is this rutland one, but it requires weekly battery changes

I use the slightly less powerful brother for 1.5 miles of fencing. A big 12v leisure battery lasts two weeks.

Depending on the length of fencing you will be running and the energiser, you may need more than one earth stake spaced at least 2 metres apart.

At most it would be 200 metres. No post and rail so would use stakes. And hoping to get solar battery. Sorry thick q, what're earth stakes !? And is energiser the battery? :p
 
You will need an energiser (fencer) for 200M, you shouldn't need anything too powerful.Wolseley Mosquito is quite good as comes fitted to an earth stake. All fencers need an earth stake and insulated posts.Plastic 1.5m posts are good for horses. Ensure the fence tape is not touching vegetation and all the connections are good.Connect your energiser to a 12 volt battery and away you go. You can buy a solar panel from Maplin, which will trickle charge a 12 volt battery, but you would be advised to fully charge it first on a mains charger.Also ensure your earth stake is pushed well into the ground. On dry soil use a second stake,wired to the first and at least 2m away,soak the surrounding soil with water to aid a good earth.

The energiser is the bit that electrifies the fence :)

These still need a battery since the solar bit only helps to recharge the battery.

Earth stakes go into the ground and connect to the earth connection on the energiser

Can I hijack thread briefly ;-) if I get a solar panel to charge a 12v battery, do I just try and clip the clips onto the positive and negative on the battery along with the clips from the energiser?

I my experience always buy a energiser bigger than you think you are going to need, it may cost you a little bit more but it means if you need to sub divide or the fence loses voltage due to wet grass touching you will still have enough zap to keep them in. Remember if you are putting multiple strands up to keep a small pony from going under a fence that can double or triple the length of tape, more tape the more zap is drained. Make sure your earth spike is long enough and in dry weather keep wet or you will lose zap. Have a spare battery, you can use old car batteries but if they are discharged completely you will kill it so swop and recharge on a regular basis.

When you say "powerful" - what do you mean. All energisers run at anything from 4000volts upwards. Equestrian ones (6000v) normally run slightly lower than an agricultural one designed for sheep or foxes (8-9000v).
The joule rating determines how much wire may be attached to the energiser. This may go up to 5 joules in the UK (illegal to go any higher) From what I've been reading go for about 1 joule coupled to a 10watt solar panel.

Mains is by far the best option if you can do it baring in mind that the fence may be 500m away from the energiser.
