OK can anyone recommend the above. Our YO wanted to use rope and I was like no way so now on a mission to find quality tape at a reasonable price. Please help and links would be great

i use rope..it is far more durable..and doesn't mark/cut the ponies if they run through it..

i find tape flaps about in the wind, is easily damaged and needs replacing far more often than the rope...

Tape worked fine for me, until we had our post and rail put up! But I have no experience of rope, so cannot really recommend one over the other...

We have electric rope everywhere - last lots longer than tape which can fray / split / cause injury - I recommend Gallagher fencing systems - there advise is pretty sound too!

why were you "like no way"???

rope is thicker than tape..and doesn't have a nasty "sharpness" to it..which slices through joints like knife through butter....not nice, i can assure you...

We've got tape as we thought it would be better when we bought - will certainly replace with rope - tape is a pin and it's very easy for the electric wires to get snapped in it, it drags more in the wind and is far harder/more time consuming to move.

Another vote for rope

admittedly my lad managed to run away with a whole row (switched on) last winter and dragged the whole lot out and across ur field - not one cut (apart from lots of broken wire strands in the tape!

We use rope, doesn't flap about in the wind and looks neater than tape. We also use round wooden posts, they are better than the polly posts, unless of course it's for temporary paddocks or strip grazing. Also make sure you use proper connectors and don't knot the rope to join. Also don't let the tape/rope touch the wood posts as they conduct elec into ground and will discharge your batteries very quickly, use screw in insulators. Sounds very confusing, but once you get to grips with all the different bits you'll need, it really is a good alternative to the usual farm fencing, and more versatile.

We use tape at moment but it's useless in the wind and gets mangled pretty easily, when we're putting in our new fences in the summer (if the husband gets round to it) then we're going with rope.

I have a Lux dressage saddle, 17 medium, havana & a 17" medium black wintec dressage saddle that need new homes...

I assumed that rope was more evil if a horse was to become caught in it? And didn't realise it was tougher. Can horses see it though? It's only very thin 5mm

What we have up at the moment and I think YO is intending to use allround is only 5mm hence why I thought it would not last and cause more problems to the horses than say thicker tape

I use rope & have had no problems with it. I buy mine from either farmcare or Paddock Perfection. It is so much better than tape. It doesn't flap about in the wind. I looks alot tidier, you get a better connection, it's easier to tension & it wears alot better.

It's normally 5-6mm thick which is ample & can be seen by horses easily.

I have had no problems with tape although I do have posts every 5 feet. Tape is better as horses can see it easier.

Actually, when I think about it, it's my 3yo Houdini I have problems with - she has learned how to disconnect the battery, how to lay the plastic posts flat, then tiptoe between the live wires.

Clippersharp do Electric fencing.....I bought some the other day and it was reasonably priced. Have a look on their website or give them a call - 01823 681076
The white tape is easily seen by the horses and the green tape is more camoflauged but the horses still know its there. So if YO doesnt want to see tape everywhere then that might be the better option.

I don't think it matters what you use so long as its not sagging and there is a current running through it.

Farmcareuk is good for getting stuff

We use rope, very visible and last much longer.
When tape bends, the wires carrying the current can break, leaving it ineffective.

As important as being able to see the tape, the horses can 'hear/sense' it too....... I use new 5mm wire on the top strand, and then because I like to be able to see it, I use older tape which doesnt conduct leccy as its too joined/broken, on the lower hooks of the posts.
