The farmer where I keep my pony has agreed that I can section off a 'fatty paddock'. Can anyone give me an idiots guide to the equipment that I need, setting up the electric fencing and where to buy the best (cheapest?!) bits. Had a hack around the internet but a bit overwhelmed by all the options! Any advise gratefully received, thanks.

Have a look on ebay, you need an energiser, mains, leisure battery or normal battery to suit your preference, posts and either tape or rope. You will find starter kits that include all you need for a small pen for about £100. I can't remember the name of the place we bought from but was ebay seller based in Huddersfield area and was brilliant, really helpful. Buying a kit will give you around 200 metres of tape and and energiser that will power about 3km of it, 20 posts and a couple of signs, it will also be everything that you need to set up. If you go with mains then you will need at least 3 metre long earth stakes and the wire to connect them to make it safe, most of the portable (battery) ones come with built in earth stakes. We had the hobbyguard until it was stolen and it was really good and dead easy to use, we had it 4 years with no problems running constantly and used the big square batteries (pp9 I think).

Hope that helps

I got this one no long ago, its lightweight, small so you can hardly notice it (thieves!), works great and a good price too.

Post, not sure how many you will need but I would make a good sized paddock, enough room for them to canter, you can always try ebay to see if they are cheaper.

Tape - But I would try ebay for a cheaper selection first.

You will need a car battery (thats what i use, last longer)

Thank you...I like the starter kit idea...will look on ebay. I'll need to use portable batteries...how long does a charge usually last for?

we were lucky enough to be given a box of the batteries by a bloke who did roadworks (the flashing lamps), from a box of 12 I still have about 5 left and that was over a couple of years. I ran it on the slow pulse once the horses were used to it which made it last longer. I used to have to change the battery every few months but the more tape you have (strands) the faster it will use them. If you only have a couple of strands on a small area one will last for ages.

I bought a starter kit a few years ago but found the stakes too short. I have since bought items seperately mainly off ebay. I bought an energiser from Robinsons that has a built in earth stake. I would buy a leisure battery, mine lasts for months before it needs charging, stakes and tape, I bought the 40mm from ebay. You will need gate connectors and end fastennings so you can tension the tape from where the fence starts and ends. We have a long run of fencing and have wooden fence posts every 4 or so stakes just to stabalise it as in the wind a long run off tape does kind of blow over. I would put a wooden post in on any corners and for your gate way.
Good luck
