Hello,
Im just having so many problems with my electric fence...my old pony who should know better is just running through the fence I have taken 3 hrs putting up...!!
I have a 12v energizer, car battery charged and double fenced so that she has to go through two lots of fencing to get into the other side....
I just dont know what to do really.....do you have to have a lope for the electric to pass through it...or can it just run in a straight line from one end of the field to the other...?
Im lost....

Have you got an earth rod in the ground?

Have you got one of the testers to see if electric is pasing along the fence?

it could be that the amount of electric fencing you are using is too much for your battery to cope with.

ie the energy from the battery is being diluted because there is too much fence.

you would need additional batteries/ power ( at differernt parts of the field) to electrify the fence enough for it to pack a decent punch that your horse is going to respect.

havent got a tester but thinking of buying a lorry battery to give it a good wack....she just does not respect my fencing at all and it is almost a game for her to just run straight through it....at the mo Im either going to have to stable her or just let her have run of the field which is really annoying ;0(

Is your electric fencing fairly new? The wire threads are prone to snapping and if you have cheaper stuff, they have no crosswiring within the tape so all it needs is a break once in each wire strand to stop it conducting.

Have you made sure the enegiser is well connected to the wire threads in the tape? It's easy to clip it on without the wires being touched.

Is it touching anything non-plastic anywhere? If it's touching grass or wooden fence posts or trees etc, it'll drain out very quickly and won't work.

Is your battery actually working? Do you get a shock from it further up?

I get a shock from it about 3 meters of the way down from the enegizer but after that it stops....the tape is touching grass and trees but im wondering if the tape needs to be in a lope as at the moment either end is tied to the fence....so its just one long line....?
Fencing is all new as well

If its touching a tree it will stop the flow or circuit try reading this
http://www.horetalk.co.nz/features/hd-fencing.shtml

Or maybe you need to make a smaller paddock as a leisure battery should give off approx 5,000volts for upto 2000 either ft or yards can't remember now. But if it touches anything wood or lots of grass (you will hear it cracking) it will interupt the circuit

That's your problem then. I'm not suprised it's not working it it's touching grass and trees!! If you've tied it directly to a wooden fence post (or worse, a wire one) I'm amazed you get any shock at all, anywhere! Grass and wood conducts electricty to a point (you get a huge shock if you touch a peice of grass to the fence!) and all the charge will be draining out down them. You have effectively earthed the line in various places and it it's not going to drain down you (and give you a shock) because the grass and tree's are easier. It should not be touching anything other than the plastic poles (and baling twine at the ends).

It doesn't need to be loop - a single line is just fine, and generally works better. A 12v battery should be ample to do at least 3000m of fencing, providing it's not touching anything. It if is, it electrifies about 10m

Don't waste your money buying a lorry battery it will be no better than a car battery. Buy yourself a leisure battery, should get one for about £35. These are designed to be run down to very little & then recharged, car batteries are not.

Make sure that your system is earthed, use a steel rod of at least 1 metre long & sink it deep in the ground. You don't need the rope/tape looped for it to work.

Your electric tape/rope must not have grass/bushes/trees growing up through it as it will earth the fence & you will have no power. Use proper connectors to join the tape/rope don't knot it as you will have a lesser connection. Use insulators on your wooden posts. Do not just wrap the tape/rope around the wooden posts. Wood may not conduct but when it is wet it does.

Properly installed you should get between 4000 & 5000 volts through the fence. If the fence is not conducting the power then there is little to deter your horse running through it.

thanks everyone - after much destress got it working!! It was due to the fence touching trees and grass....
little bugger tried to run through it and got the biggest shock - shot off the othe direction and gave me the sad look the entire time I was there!!
I managed to get a shock too when I didnt dip low enough underneath it!! Ouch!!
Thanks for all the advice - much appreciated, read and digested - anyone with electric fence probs can now ask me anything

Well done, that will teach the greedy begger!
Now he/she will be plotting to find another way in to the other side, my so and so will gently pull the plastic poles out of the ground and then step over them, I have stopped that by winding tape down the pole....he he he he....we have vayes to stop them...he he he
