Morning all,
I’m looking at getting my daughters a pony in the next few months, to keep at home. Our field has a tall dense hedge as a boundary however it isn’t completely stock proof therefore I want to run 2 lines of electric rope around the field also.
Could anyone advise me on what height roughly I should have the 2 lines of fencing for a 12hh (ish) pony and probably a slightly smaller companion?
Thanks in advance!

I have 4ft posts. I put one line on the top and one half way but with a small one I’d do second and one above the bottom I think

Little ones can be very good escape artists, so I'm told. I've seen a little one go under a fence that was 12-18 inches high. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself - he just ran up to it, dropped down and slid under it. It really put me off having a mini as a companion.

Of course if you've also got hedging beyond the electric it will hopefully act as a deterrent to this type of escapology.

My mare is 15hh, and her two strands of electric rope are at 3.5 feet and 1.5 feet. I’ve never had any issues with it being too short, but she respects electric fencing. About how big of a pony are you thinking of getting? The smaller ones can be a bit more of an escape artist! ?

With small ponies with thick coats ALWAYS have the highest power fence you can power and make sure it works properly. A pony and even cows can hear the tick of the fence, I think they can also sense it with their whiskers, they will go through it if they think it is off. Once they learn, I had a pony who's first job when turned out in the field was to check the fence to see where he could get out, they have hours to spend working out their escape.
Thick coats and no shoes mean the conduction to complete the circuit, is less.
