I'm trying to buy a new energiser and battery (or batteries) for my fields - I have one set that works great but the labels have faded and I can't see what make they are!

It's to fence about 4 acres, split into 4 paddocks with rope and tape.

Can anyone advise on what type of battery/energiser would be best? I'm a bit confused re. batteries as some say you HAVE to have a leisure battery, others say car battery fine.

I have a good mains battery charger that works fine on the other battery.

Any recommendations on a) cheapest places to buy energisers and batteries and b) what sort of battery to get and c) what brand/size of energiser is best?

I have a Hotline Gemini 120 energiser, 1.2 joules output energy so gives a good zap! It will power up to 12km of fencing (not sure what this is in acreage!) I purchased it off of ebay for around £90 about a year ago.

I use car batteries that I get from the local scrap yard (get them to check they work first) for £10 each. I have two, one on the fencing and one on charge.

Great thank you - I'm keeping an eye on ebay! So do you find car batteries are OK? they don't damage the energiser or anything?

I have a shepherdess solar panel and energiser. With a proper leisure battery I only charge it a couple of times a year.

(Where are you I have a spare set up that's as new I want to sell)

I haven't had any problems with using car batteries and it certainly hasn't damaged the energiser. They need recharging more frequently than leisure batteries - I find mine will last about 10 days but I am only energising approx half an acre, 3 strands, at any one time. I have my fencing set up so that I only electrify the section that the horses are in so that I can get the best zap - my horse is an escape artist!

a car battery will wear out eventually with all the running down.leisure batteries are designed to be run down again and again. 2 earth stakes are a good idea.
