Ok so help needed, numpty questions to follow

I have always been on yard with post and rail fencing or electric fencing in place. I now have access to my own grazing and need to split into smaller paddocks.

Where do i start with electric fencing? What items do i need? Am i best buying the tallest posts possible?

I have been looking into the starters packs in Robinsons but a few people have mentioned i am better off buying each item on its own.

Also i have NO idea how to get it all working, it all sounds ever so complex!

Cookies and milk to anyone who c an help my baffled brain ;)

That's why they do starter packs, so you have everything you need, matched with instructions to take out the complexity.

As for the height of the posts, depends on your horses. Mine are currently mostly held in by posts three feet tall with a single strand of tape. Any or all of them are quite capable of jumping out over five feet if they wished, they just don't bother as they are happy where they are. They range in height from 13.3 to 17hh+

Thank you, I just had to idea where to start and didnt know if i was best buying everything on its own. I like the sound of instructions!

I have a 16.1hh that will be in a 15x15 pen due to recovering from an op. I have seen they do 5ft posts so maybe they are the best option. I will then be strip grazing my Section C and my Connie as there is far too much grass!

Before you go & buy a starter pack or infact anything you need to decide on a few things first.
1. How long a length of fencing will I want to electrify? Not all emergisers have the same ability so you need to buy the right one or even stronger than you need for the job. Remember that if you double strand it you must double the length you will be electrifying i.e. 200 yards of fence with two strands is a 400 yard length.

2. How high a fence do you want, I have 2 x 16h2" horses & my posts are 4' high and I have two strips of tape running the length.

3. Do you want tape or rope? Tape is safer as it has a lower breaking strain so less chance of injury should anything happen. How wide do you want the tape, I have 20mm & it has 6 strands of wire through it so the charge carries well.

You will need at least one gate handle & have a few connectors for the electric tape because they ensure a good connection when joining tape, just knotting doesn't guarantee a good connection.

Once you've decided on these items then buy what you want. You may find that a starter pack doesn't have everything you want. The posts are normally only 3' & sometimes the energiser only powers a very short length of tape/rope.

Where to buy from? I've found that the internet, even with postage costs, is the cheapest place. Companies mlike 'Paddock Perfection' 'Farmcare' etc who advertise on ebay are easy to deal with, offer good value & their postage is capped at around £6.85 however much you order. Oh, I forgot to say, a tester is handy, they are cheap & will tell you what charge you have through your fence & you an check if all parts are electrified.

It's easy to install, you don't need to be an electrician....Good Luck :)

If you need any advice once you've bought it about installing, or there is something you don't understand just message me & I'll help if I can.

Well im thinking 5ft posts then for my lad as he is 16hh and has to be in a small pen so id rather have a high fence.

I will have a look at those websites. Thank you :)
