yes you will need a battery but you can use car batteries if you go to scrap yards they are usually quite happy to give you one for a couple of quid then just charge it up and your away :)

I really would get an energiser and try to beg a free battery from a garage etc. Look on ebay for tape and posts. But the energiser I paid £125 for a middle of road countryman energiser and run car batteries. Best investment. I am surprised how much some 2nd hand ones go for on ebay etc. Sorry worth the spend out.

See my horse will walk through the tape no bother, which is why I need to power it up, but I cant afford an energiser + battery at the moment :(

(Just fenced off my field, building a stable etc)

Getting paid in 2 weeks so will buy it then, first thing on my list ;)

For now, does anyone have any ideas how to stop him barging through?

ABC - sorry, but once a horse starts barging through tape you will need to put a strong energiser on it to put him off, although I have known some that will even go through with the electric on. You may have to go for the cattle method of soaking their chest and 'enticing' them to try and get through the wire, but unpleasant plus, of course, you need to have electricity!

Please don't risk him going through the tape - my friend's horse recently ripped her back leg up when it got caught up in the tape and she panicked.

Until the fence is electrified then he will continue to walk through the tape. Sorry but that is a fact!

if you have any dairy farmers near you you could go to see them and ask if they will lend or higher you a fencer for a couple of weeks. This time of the year they are unlikely to be using them all.

So is my best bet to let him have full range of the field and take the electric tape down until I get my energiser? The electric tape is there to protect him from a taut barbed wire fence. I doubt he'd lean over the barbed wire due to there being looooads of grass in the field.

It seems like a lose-lose situation... :(

I think what everyone has said is right, once he starts barging through you wont stop him. My mare used to be on a yard where they spent god knows how much on a mains powered (note not at that voltage... bbq horse anyone :p) and she still decided she would go through.

However.... from my personal experience with my mare, what I did find was when I got some taller posts and put a double line of rope it did deter her more...

Just a question, is he getting into pasture you dont want him to get into or is he going through the fence and getting loose?

If he's getting into pasture you dont want him to might be worth just letting him wander till you get it electrified. Heard/seen too many horrid stories of horses getting tangled and panicking, slicing through tendons etc one horse I knew actually sliced the bulb of his heel off...

Both.... today he barged through the electric fencing gate (not the tape itself) and then through the gap where the gate is going to be. Have closed the gap by putting the wire across and have pulled the tape around. I've "criss-crossed" the tape so he can't go over or under it, and there is currently no gate so he's trapped in there (unless he barges through)

At least if he does manage to get through tomorrow its only to the other part of the field and not to a neighbours garden

Im going to try the tape for one more day and if he barges through tomorrow I'll take it down. Im not sure whether he'll barge through the tape, because it was the gate he barged through (not really a gate, a spring with a handle)

^^ hope that makes sense

Please be very careful, electric tape/rope can be leathal if they get caught up in it :(
Is he on his own?
The best option would be to loan/borrow an energiser and also sink some wooden posts into the field with isolators on as additional support for the fence line to make a more permenant solution x

From what you are saying containment is the priority, forget the stable being built.££

Electrify the fence a barger will barge and as others are saying however many strands you put up etc horse will get through and you dont want to end up with a vet bill for an injury(& on the barb wire too) Sorry try to borrow one until pay day or stick it on a credit card. Horses safety has to be paramount etc.

Yup on his own unfortunatley, desperatley looking for a companion though :(

Have text a few farmers about borrowing energisers but its not looking good. I use wooden posts and insulators

(these ones: http://www.farmcareuk.com/shop/product/insulators/combi-insulator )

But the tape falls out of the insulators when its windy and thats when he manages to get out.

As I said earlier Im going to try the tape for one more day, if not I'll either borrow an energiser or take it down til I can afford one. :(

electic tape/rope is nothing to a horse if not energized.(only an accident waiting to happen) and should never be used as a boundary fence. energized and set up right is an excellent boundary controller. sorry but you need a good high powered enegizer, powered by mains or battery(suitable to the meterage/km of the fence), a good earth connection, and no shortages due to high grass, weed or hedge. i personnaly would remove all tape/rope til you have the means to power it appropriately.

There are quite a few ways that you can save money when you own a horse but unfortunately you have to spend money on fencing. You must have an energiser, & have one strong enough to charge up the length of fence you need. You need to also think about any undergrowth that it may have to go through. Undergrowth really drains the power so if you can cut it back so none fouls the tape. You can buy budget tape at very reasponable prices on ebay.

When you are chosing the tape ensure you have one with a low breaking strain. I used some rope once & my wife & one of my horses was seriously injured when the rope didn't break. I later found out tht the breaking strain on the rope was 350kg!!!

Keep an eye on ebay, you will probably pick up an energiser at a reasonable price & also plastic fence posts & although leisure batteries are better to power the fence a car battery will do the job, but don't let it totally discharge or it will be permanently damaged & won't charge up again.

When you have the paddock set up it's good to put your horse out without a rug on. Then when he 'tests' the fence he'll get a good jolt & hopefully he'll learn about it, won't want it to happen again & will keep away from it.

Good Luck

my friend doesnt use an energizer at all, she has a tractor battery hooked up to the fence via two jump leads... just dont touch it (fell flat on my bum ... ouch!) definitely stronger than tiny mains one + energizer at home!
