Electric fencing - running 2 lots from 1 battery/energiser?

Hi everyone,

With all this rain, 1 side of my field is going under water & so I want to keep the horses off it to stop it getting even worse. However, I'd also like to open up another bit of the field, which is currently fenced off as it has direct water frontage & I don't want them falling in!

So question is, can I fence off 2 separate areas using the same battery & energiser or do I need to get 2 sets? The soggy bit of the field is maybe 50 metres long, then there's existing fencing of about 150 metres, then the next bit I'd want to fence along the waterside, which is about 175 metres. So about 375 metres in total, which I would be fencing with 2 strands of maybe 4cm tape.

Have been trawling through lots of v interesting threads on here about electric fencing & have come up with a shopping list! Just wanted to make sure this is a viable plan before I get the credit card out..!

Thank you so much for your help :)

as long as it all connects together (meaning the whole thing would be live) yes...

i used to do this....have 4 "fields" (3 resting 1 used) and an electric fence box

Most energisers will run 2 miles of tape, so I cannot see it being a problem. I run two off mine, luckily where I need to fence of is in a T shape so the tape can be connected to each other with ease. It will depend wether your fence can touch and be connected to each other, if they are oposite ends of the field you will require two energisers and two batteries.

As long as it's all connected to each other (obvious but just checking!) then I don't see why not. Myself and 2 friends had our horses all separated into 3 large paddocks completely constructed of electric fencing all running off one large leisure battery and a budget energiser. Not sure of exact meterage (sp?) but each paddock must have been at least one acre.

Yes you can - you can get a fitting that attaches the 2 lengths of tape together from most agricutural merchants. It looks like an insulated wire with 2 metal clips either end, and you attach one end to the live tape, to the new bit you want to electrify.

Hope that makes sense!

I have mains fencing with switches at critical points so I can electrify the fencing in certain fields only. I also run temporary paddocks off this fencing with tape and plastic posts. It is also possible for me to direct the power through the top wire only (for horses and cattle) or electrify all five wires (for sheep). So the answer to your question is "Yes", assuming you do what other posters have said and have due regard to the laws of physics.:D

Providing the length of your tape/rope doesn't exceed the recommended maximum length for the energiser being used there is no problem. Also ensure then all undergrowth that could foul the tape/rope is cut back because that will cut down the effectiveness of the system. Also use proper connectors rather than knot the tape/rope together as you will get a much better contact.

Hi again. Thanks very much for your very helpful responses!! Ha ha, it's exactly the laws of physics that elude me :) I guess the simpler question would have been how far can you run an electric fence! Two miles - wow. Makes my field look, well, diddy!

Thanks again - off to do some electric fence shopping now..!

Should be no problem at all. Just ensure that all your connections are good and you have a seperate earth post in each paddock. You could fit a cut out switch to seperate both areas, but this is not vital, as long as your total length does not exceed the max fr the unit.

Ooh, thanks! That link was very helpful & took me right back to o-level physics - dating myself there :) And good idea to have separate cut-out switches. As the fences will only be to stop them venturing into the temporary bog(!) or the water, hopefully they'll stay away from them anyhow. It's costing me a small fortune so don't want them snapping, eating or breaking any of it :D

Thanks again - feel much better informed now!
