I've been looking at electric fencing and am highly confuddled! Can someone possibly outline exactly what I need to set up an electic fence...in simpletons if possible! :rolleyes:
TIA!

* tape/wire depending on preference
* energiser ( one with its own earth stake makes things easier)
* battery (9v replacement or 12v which needs a battery charger)
* crocodile clips for battery to energiser
* battery charger (maybe see above)
* posts ( allow for some height under ground level)
* warning signs if nr public rights of way
* gate handle
* connectors ( between rows or along lines if a large paddock)
* stone for battery to sit on
* cover (old box/carton) to protect from elements if preferred

know what a minefield it is when starting to look at this stuff, so thought id help :)

posts,tape/rope of course.

energiser.

battery to connect to energiser (crocodile clips) or batteries to go inside energiser or mains.

earth stake (connects to energiser)

set up so that no tape is touching wooden posts,vegetation etc.
long runs need another earth stake farther along.

you can use a car battery but this has a shorter life as you use it and it runs down then need recharging.leisure batteries are designed to last longer and are not harmed by getting run down.

oh,and a battery recharger too.

I have a solar panel with a fencing unit, so I didnt have to buy batteries and dont have to recharge them!!

I have the panel, the fencing unit (which came with the wire and clips to attach it to the fence and earth!); an earthing pole and the actual fencing (rope & poles).

You may need those screw in attachments if you want to put the fencing along existing wooden fencing. You may also need some wooden stakes to assist in making corners with the electric fencing....the plastic poles dont do a good job!!

I too have a solar panel. Hubby has connected this to fence & leisure battery for those dark dismal days when panel needs that bit of extra help. Also, rigged up some lights, (sort of thing you see in down the side of people's garden path), with switch which runs of the battery/panel so I can get down to gate without breaking neck in the winter!!

My stuff is all Galleghar. Found the website & catalogue very helpful.

Brill thanks for the info :D I already have the posts and rope, so I guess I now need battery and energiser with earthing?

Hi Vallin, when you look at energisers don't just go for the cheapest, they are rated depending on how many metres of fencing you need to electrify. Similar thing with the batteries, the bigger the AMH the longer they will stay charged. (I know cos I've been there lol)

Ok cool thanks, it's just to strip graze/make a small paddok so it'll only be a few hundred meters I would imagine. I've been looking at the paddok master ones, are they any good? I don't think my budget will quite stretch to gallagher atm!
