Electric fencing

We currently have our paddocks split up using white 2" tape and battery. Our Welsh pony respects the fence, but the thoroughbred ploughs into it and the kick he gets seems to be a game for him. He scrambles through and has a few injuries from getting stuck.
We are thinking of replacing the current fence with a mains battery, using only wooden fence posts and using 2 1/2mm wire, but are concerned that we'll spend a lot of money doing this and he'll still plough through it/ injure himself even more. Can anyone recommend what's best ? (He has already demolished a wire deer fence by pushing again it and clambering up it!). Thanks.

I'm against wire & rope in electric fences, I've seen some horrible injuries to both horses & people when something goes wrong as the breaking strain is too high or it doesn't really have one.

How many strands of tape do you run along your fence? I find a double strand keeps my horses in ok. If double isn't enough then run another strand so you have three. Ensure that you have a good earth, a metre length is what is recommended & that should ensure you get a good charge going through it. Also make sure there is no undergrowth shorting on any of the fence. Additionally use connectors rather than just tying tape together, the conection is more stable. You should get at least 5000v going through the tape & hopefully that should deter him. Finally put your horse out without a rug so when he touches the fence he will get the full jolt, hopefully this should work.
