Electric tape fencing and solar power

I'm looking to add some electric fencing tape and a solar power charger. My chickens have started jumping on the fence surrounded my back garden. Are people finding the tape better than the old wire? Heck, I'm not sure if the old wire is even available. And for the solar power panel, do you all find it does a good job of keeping the fence charged?

I have just started using my little Hotline Shrike with the solar attachment. Got it from a firm called VOSS. A bit early to say how durable it is, but it is in the horses' pasture and I've connected it up to tape.

There seems to be a decent enough current through it; I've tested it.

Re. wire -v- tape. I think you can still get wire?? Personally I wouldn't ever use it for horses, but I'm not aware that you can't purchase it?

Not sure whether this will solve your wandering chooks problem however; my experience is that the dang things will go exactly where it pleases them and even if they get a shock it'll only encourage them to fly higher to get across it!! You could of course try clipping their wings - clip ONE wing not both!! - but sadly IME this still hasn't stopped my lot making their escape bid.

Don't know how many you've got, but if you've only got a few you might find a portable run/house on e-bay? I'm a great fan of the Omlet plastic moulded ones; you can sometimes pick them up on e-bay, tho' they do tend to hold their price. That way at least they'd be enclosed and wouldn't be up to mischief! Of course then you'd have the PITA job of moving them every so often.

Standing on electric wire will not stop birds as they are not earthed. Just look at the swallows and starlings on overhead wires.
