I was wondering whether plain salt is a practical alternative to electrolytes for horses? I live overseas at a place where the summer is quite long and intense and my horse sweats enough - it is not always easy to get horse supplies on a timely manner here and I am therefore trying to find some practical solutions whenever possible. If yes, at what dosage for a mare aged around 18yrs old, around 450kgs (15'3).
Thanks

If you can get lo salt, it has potassium in it, you can make your own by mixing 2/3 ordinary salt to 1/3rd lo salt. If not just adding salt will help, I use a tablespoon or two each day.

There was a really good article in British Eventing magazine re Electrolytes and salt and the difference. It also states about salt potentially being harmful to the gut. It's by Dr David Marlin google it or if I can dig it out I'll try pick out the main points.
