Hi everyone, I’ve dropped myself in it by entering Ele 53 next Sunday! Looking through the test we can do all but the leg yields!!! I can leg yield my pony both ways but the angle is quite steep in this test!
It goes from L to R/S (one to the right one to the left). Running through it this evening I really struggle to push his quarters over and keep him straight enough ! I completely lose the hindquarters and we end up drifting back to the fence!
Any tips or exercises for the future to help me increase the steepness of the leg yields and keep control of his shoulder; I’m really trying to keep a strong outside rein contact and half halt but clearly I’m not doing well enough!! 😂

I know it may be basic but I see a lot of people with this problem leg yield by moving their lower leg back from the knee, make sure you bring your leg back from your hip to move the 1/4a across, don’t let them trail practice moving across and if they trail be quick to correct, even a tap behind to push them over can help a quicker reaction.
Long term teaching ly in hand helps it ridden also x

Take it sloooowwww. Rather than a full movement from one marker to the next, concentrate on a few, quality steps, then straighten, then ask again. You minimise the risk of losing the back end then.
I learnt to leg yield by riding a change of diagonal, then flexing the neck away from the direction of travel, allowing the quarters to step under. This might also help?

And, on Sunday, be prepared to sacrifice a bit of the quality of both leg yields if your pony is struggling. Far better to pick the marks up in other areas and have a happy outcome than try to push your pony to do something he’s not quite comfortable with.

Thanks guys! I’m thinking more long term so I’ll try those ideas! I have no expectations for the weekend, defo want him to be happy in himself and comfortable over trying to achieve something we aren’t ready for! Thank u !
