My YO is thinking of changing our bedding to this, we are currently on shavings and rubber matting - I like a decent bed of shaving which has never been a problem so just wondering what this elephant grass would be like?

She has a few bags to test and see what she thinks, doesnt seem to smell and seems absorbent enough - anyone have any long term experience with it?

What do the horses think of it - is it comfy enough?

It is very dusty. We used it for about a year as it was about £4 a bale, but then they realised that more and more people were using it, they hiked the price up closer to shavings and hemcore. I switched back to hemcore which is similar but Hemcore isn't dusty at all and a nice cleaner bed. Personally I prefer shavings and hemcore to it and wouldn't use it again.

Hmmm, we have to be careful what bedding we use because the local farmer takes the muck away and we can't use shavings.

My horse is allergic to the hemp (allergic conjunctivis) so I use Miscanthus (Elephant Grass). I love it. I deep litter and find it absolutely fine. Not quite as good as hemp for the wet but the actual bed is lovely and it is very easy to skip out. It also doesn't move like hemp - which I find slips and slides a bit.

I've used it for approx 2 months now.
The bed 'feels' like shavings.
It absorbs like shavings.
I can be a bit dusty when you put in a new bag (but so can shavings)
I also find it a little bit slippery (when it's new) but this hasn't caused my horse a problem.
Easy to muck out. I use about the same quantity per week as shavings.
All in all it seems like a straight 1:1 swap for shavings because it costs about the same too.

A friend used this and bought 50 bales as they had been convinced by the salesmans patter that it was at least as absorbant as flax but much cheaper.

Well, her beds were sopping wet and the horses weren't particularly wet horses either. Needless to say, she got shot of the unopened bales and went back to flax!

I've used it for several years and deep littered it. got on well but did find it didn't eliminate or cut down on the smells.

Also, 2 of my ponies at the time really liked it and would eat it (regardless of it being treated to be 'unpalitable')

I didn't find it particularly dusty but did find the euculaptus they coat it with really overbearing and it got to the back of my throat in a chemically way.

(This was the Fenningtons brand)

Are yard have just moved onto it too, i really like it as my horse would be eat all his straw bedding. Theres no smell or any wee weeping out the stable door:o but it tricky too muck out as all the little bits of poo are impossible to pick up so takes a tad longer but i really like it :)
