Thanks! Yes the horses are running great just now!

Except for Big Midnight who looks every inch a staying chaser and is bred to be one too but lacks one vital ingredient - guts ?? He won't jump a fence like a chaser, he jumps them like puissance walls - big, slow and awkwardly ???

I am absolutely delighted for the horse that came 2nd. He is owned by one of the most genuinely nicest couple you would ever meet in your life who will happily wait for their horses to mature, grow up or in this case give them plenty of time to get over an injury. He will come on a lot for the run!

Oh goodness no he is the easiest horse on the planet! He just wants to jump hurdles not fences. 8 hurdles races, 4 wins 2 places. 8 chases 2 bad places 8 rounds of horrendous jumping ???

If he sticks to hurdles he will win plenty more races. When he finishes racing he would make an amazing hunt horse (if hunting continues that is ...) or a great happy hacker/nanny horse as he is a dude to ride and 110% bombproof.

Sounds like he needs to stick with hurdles if he is happiest and performs well over them. My boy was big, gangly and weak when he started the trainer was very upfront about him when I got him, he was one that needed time to mature as he had the ability but the owner wanted him out racing. His loss is my gain as he is an absolute dude.

What is Big Midnight's racing name???

Being nosey when you transported Our Marty to Doncaster did you have to do the declarations, saddle him and parade him?? Or were there others with you apart from your stable jockey?

There were 3 of us in the truck - the Jockey, my Co driver and myself. Co driver just drives, tells great stories, picks my saddle up and throws the Jockey up. He doesn't do much with the horses.

We don't declare horses at the races any more. All Dec's are done 48hours in advance (by 10am 2 days before the meeting) and from then on your horse is a runner. Before Covid we used to have to sign the papers on the day when we got there to declare the horses were there. Not any more. So I just have to drop the colours in.

Ey Up Steve (Co driver) picks up my saddle from the weighing room for me just because he wants to, I could easily do it if the Jockey didn't have a ride in the race before. Then I tack up, saddle up, lead up, bring in, hose down, walk off and then put away and check over the horse.

In essence I am the main person responsible for getting that horse tacked up and out for his race on time when we head away racing. If something goes wrong it's on my head.

Is it just the way he's standing or does he have a hind leg very reminiscent of Party Politics? Clearly he doesn't take after him for jumping big fences ?

It's just the way he is standing. His conformation is pretty much spot on until he trots then he plaits so badly behind he could knit you a wooly jumper in a 50meter stretch of trot ?

Hi Elf...sorry don't know much about racing but back the greys when i go (take my 95yr dad!) have you got any greys.? If there are no greys in a race then i look at the names - that's my strategy! Is that why i have never become a millionaire - am i doing it wrong?;)

Betting on greys isn't the worst strategy known to man ?? we only have a handful of greys in the yard. The old handicapper Celtic Flames and a couple of unraced 3yo's who should be decent enough in time. They don't have racing names yet and wouldn't be out until nearer the end of the season if at all this time around.

My father always bet on the greys too. He would be even older (than your Dad) if he was still living, but a horse man all his life.

As kids when the Grand National was first televised dad used to take our bets (pennies) on our favourites. I won with the grey Nicklaus Silver.:) First race I really remember watching. I do remember coming home from primary school one day and mum telling me a horse called Oxo had won the National.

At least one more winner today too! His mum moved to the same yard as me when she was pregnant with him and he's wanted to be a jockey since he was tiny!
