So we had roast chicken tonight for the first time since getting our Newfoundland. I was really careful to double bag the carcass and put it outside, but then put the baking dish in warm soapy water with some Aldi washing up liquid to soap. Heard some splashing, assumed he was having a drink and ignored it. Heard again 5 minutes later, went through just to check and he's got his head in the sink drinking the soapy water.

The packet says if ingested seek medical advice, but it was quite dilute and a Google search suggests that enough toddlers do it with no ill effects that I shouldn't worry unduly...

...but of course I'm panicking. Emergency vet at 10pm seems a bit ott, he's not being sick, drooling (any more than usual) and is just quietly asleep. Should I be ringing them?

If you are worried, ring the vet but I am sure he will be fine. If he had eaten the bottle of neat liquid then I expect he would need medical attention but as you say, this was diluted.

As above and keep him drinking water...keep an eye on him for vomiting, lethargy, etc.ring vet in morning to see if they want him in,but I think he will be ok.

Take him out for a long walk, before bed time, and offer lots of clean water, they don't sleep if they have a gut problem, just wait till he comes home with a distended belly full of cleansing from a cow, after digging in to the muck heap!......... maybe Newfoundlands don't do that, but Labs do :D, and they also jump on to the kitchen table to access a ten pound salmon straight from the river!

Thank you all - he seems absolutely fine, behaving normally, not been sick, no upset stomach. I'll keep a close eye, but think I was probably panicking unnecessarily.

Bonkers - that sounds really quite unpleasant!! I'm sure he'd be completely happy to eat a whole salmon though :p.
