Hi guys,

Well had the vet back out to ella today, Its not good the ulcer is so deep that the skin between the ulcer and the iris is so thin that it is forcing her iris out of her eye ball!! Mr mellings has said he has never seen anything like this before, alarm bells are ringing!! if the iris is protuding even more tomorrow he is getting her in for surgery asap... I asked him being 27 years old would she be ok under a general and he said yes shes a good weight and in great health thank god...
Mr mellings is preparing to do an operation that he has never done before by opening up her eye and taking a piece of flap from under her bottom eye lid and stiching it over the iris.. What do you think??? Do you think that this could work??

worried mum

deni :)

My dog had a graft just like you describe for a prolapsed iris out of a corneal tear, and it worked brilliantly. Not a horse I know, but this might encourage you the principle can work.

Yes, it can be successful. It is regularly done in small animals in general practice so not an unusual procedure. However, it is usually carried out under standing anaesthetic and local nerve blocks though it can also be done under general.

Oh dear sounds like quite an ordeal....but if the vet is willing to operate I would see this as a positive sign he must be confident of a good result and im sure if he had doubts he would tell you.

They usually work very well, and yes - as glenruby says, are usually done under standing sedation and local anaesthetics (there are very very good ones for the eyes these days, she wont feel much at all)

Horrid for you, and its not terribly pretty for a few days - but a good chance of helping.

Good luck !!

Personally at that great age I wouldn't operate, I wouldn't put my older girl through a GA now and she's just 19. Fingers x for u

Hi guys

Thank you so much for your replys, Ella seems to be a little like herself today telling me off for not giving her a digestive biscuit as soon as she seen me lol... I will just keep my eye on her and see what next week brings xx

I wouldn't want to put a 27 yr old horse through that. If I did I definitely wouldn't want someone doing a procedure they had never performed before, I'd want her to go to a specialist centre or even consider having the eye removed. Good luck hope it goes well.

Oh dear what a shame. A GA is a risk for any horse at any age but I'm sure your vet would say if he tought it was too risky.

Fingers crossed all OK, healing ((((vibes)))) heading your horse's way.

((((hugs)))) for you

One of our terriers had a weeping ulcer in his eye,so the vets did a graft like your vet is going to do,you must realise that it is going to be weeks keeping eye clean and she will be basically blind in the eye, our terrier sees light but nothing else, and just lately he started having a lot of discharge from it and it seems he has no teardrops from it? so now is on tear gels for the rest of his life luckerly for us he's very good having them put in, but a large slice of ham makes it better:):) So the best of luck.
