I thought I would post an update on Ellie, as its been ages since my last one when we had to get a second opinion as I wasnt happy with her treatment for the left hind PSD she had been diagnosed with and seemed to be getting much worse.

Second opinion vet found her to be lame on all four legs. She went in for lots of investigations, which she wasn't exactly the best patient for

lets just say she now has a reputation for being a very very clever little madam who will do ANYTHING not to have a nerve block

The good news is that she doesnt have PSD!!! But she does have a left hind tendon sheath synovitis, which as I'm told is nothing to worry about at all

. Vet said that sometimes PSD is a bit of a dustbin diagnosis, and that for a true diagnosis you need a positive result from both a nerve block and ultrasound. The ultrasound she said she wasn't at all concerned about, and she was negative to the nerve block. But the awful hip dropping she had been doing vanished upon blocking the tendon sheath. She's going to be having some physio for that to sort out her wonky pelvis/si which has been caused by her dropping the hip.

She also had foot inbalance in all feet

which has been rectified and she is a loads better now, but unfortunately this has affected her front fetlocks which she has synovitis in. She also has osteoarthiritis in the hocks

So she managed to go from 1 thing wrong to 5 things wrong....but hopefully most should resolve, apart from the hocks which should be managable. She is having steroid and hyalaronic (sp!) acid injections to the fetlocks, hocks and the tendon sheath. Vet did advise that her fetlocks will probably be quite sensitive so she may well benefit from having pads fitted when she comes back to work and limited trotting on roads (I dont think i will ever trot on a road again!!). We are now doing box rest at least until the new year

but vet thinks she will definately go partying again!!

She is however looking loads better! She has had one fetlock and the tendon sheath medicated so far, and i did have a momentary panic re laminitis when she was stood like a rocking horse for a couple of days but vet said no she's fine and she is already moving better in the walk. She's loving the box rest thing now, nice warm bed, rugs and ad-lib hay

she is going to be a fatty!
