Not terribly exciting stuff folks, sorry about that, but quite a handy little outing to check if I was ready for the forthcoming eventing season.

I knew it would be a rush as they never have many in the 1.05m class, so April (groom extraordinaire) warmed up HumungaHorse while I got on with Lucca (OH's hunter, and Humunga but not as Humunga as the afore-mentioned big one). Didn't have time to walk the course but watched the first couple go round and it seemed to ride well: 3 and 4 stride related distance, 2 stride double and one dog-leg.

None of mine have done much jumping lately as my field has been sodden (and I've been away skiing

), and Lucca has definitely been a bit fresh. He's got a huge stride and masses of power but I managed to channel it and, despite getting pretty damn deep to a couple, he just had the last fence down behind. He felt so much better than last time out at Laughton Manor, so Oasby PN here we come!

HumungaHorse had a number of reasons to be doggy: he had bashed and cut his back leg the other day and it's still a bit sore, he did some canter work yesterday (terribly tiring when you're 16.3hh and punctuate every canter stride with a buck), and tbh 1.05m (in his eyes) is hardly worth getting out of bed for! So, after some very uninspiring warm-up fences I went in, waggoned him round, prodded him with my spurs a lot and miraculously went clear. There were three clears, me and two 14.2-15hh ponies, so I was obviously going to be third! I buzzed him up a bit, made it really difficult for him by taking some shortcuts and tricky lines and, bless him, he obliged with a clear to be - you guessed it - 3rd!

The moral of this story is: when you've got a nice, genuine, straightforward horse that will try for you (aka Lucca), ride nicely. When you've got a laid-back, really irritating one who can't be a**ed, ride like you've forgotten everything you've ever learnt and make him engage his brain....the more you do, the less he does, so turn the tables on him!

hahaha, well done.
can i add to that, from past experience - if you have an amazingly bright one, he'll work out that the more you do, the less he has to do... so ride that one like a muppet as well!
was it indoor or outdoor please, nicky? think my girl's next outing had better be somewhere a bit more spacious...

PMSL ! Loved your report! Well done to the two boyo's for managing to pull it off with minimum amounts of effort!!

Will Big boy Ross be going straight out at novice this Spring?

I found it shockingly easy to ride like a muppet today.

It was outdoors and a really spacious arena. There's another one on 24 Feb, combined training if you want to do dressage too (dressage is indoors).

Big Boy Ross is indeed going straight out at novice, at Oasby.

He's quite comical in his indifference to things and we have to be really creative to get him to put some effort in. I had a jumping lesson a few weeks ago when we had to put everything up to 1.30m to get him to operate; the one he jumped best was a single rail at that height over a (full) water tray with a A frame on it, lazy b***er!

Nicky - sorry to hijack your post

O_B - did you used to have a little silver 3.5T lorry? There was one at Elms farm today with your name on!! Looked like part of a web address but the door was open and I couldn't see the beginning of it - just your name!

Well done! I was also there today but I think I had left by the time you were on. Thought it was a good day but there were some kids in the warm up I could have cheerfully throttled - and the ones that started screaming their heads off as I started my dressage test should be shot!!

I sold that lorry over a year ago now, have repeatedly told the new owners to take that name off,but they wouldnt. People keep spotting it all over the country and it keeps getting back to me! Last time it was spotted in Surrey

Grrr. Oh well. What can I do?

How bizarre! They get around a fair bit then! For one split second I thought it was you and was going to come over and then reality struck that it was perhaps a bit far for you to come for dressage and SJ'ing!!
grin.gif

PMSL !! It is really embarassing!Because everyone thinks that they are me... I hope that they are not bad 'representatives' of my name- did you see them ride? Please say that they were reasonable riders?!
blush.gif

Then again if they ride like Sarah Cutteridge or Daisy Dick then I will be VERY happy and they are welcome to keep my name on the horsebox
