How big do you think these "ponies" are? And how big is Megan? I only ask as my youngster (rising 3) is very similar breeding to her homebred Winnie. In fact mine looks the spitting image of Winnie and is very much the same build. She's 14.2 and a bit at the mo. Hoping she will make 14.3 but not sure she'll be any bigger. Does Meg look a little big on Winnie?

I found the answer to my own question on the BE website. Winnie is 15.1. Marge who she qualified for Badminton Grassroots for someone else is only 14.2, apparently.

I seem to recall that Megan is about 5’6”

I think Bear is the smallest at about 14/14.1, Jam is a tad over 15hh and Winnie a little bigger.

I’m sure Marge is a Connemara ‘pony’ as she has been successful in m&m WH classes (her owner is very local to me and I’ve seen her out and about for years)

Thanks for that info. That's interesting. So even though Megan's 5'6" she doesn't look that big on Marge, although I suspect Marge is a "big" 14.2! I'm just under 5'4" so hopefully can get away with not looking too ridiculous on a 14.3 chunky type.

Heck, I’m your height and think nothing of getting on anything over 13.2 as long as it’s not a show pony 😂 Used to ride 12hh up until I ‘filled out’ a little

That's comforting! Really hoping she might grow to 15hh though. She's two years and 9 months at the mo. Fingers crossed.

I don't think height is as always as much of a factor as how they turn out conformationally and take your leg up. I'm 5'7 and look absolutely fine on my 15.1hh who has quite a wide barrel and takes my leg up well, I looked and felt a bit ridiculous on a much finer 15.1hh sports horse type I rode.

I know and have actually put a stick on myself a 15.1 connie that got measured in as 148 last week lol

Could well be! I know they are supposed to be cracking down a bit.

I’ve written for several of Marge’s dressage tests (she was evented by a couple of local pros) and I know the owner was worried about being too tall on her. She definitely doesn’t look as overheight as others I’ve seen.

I'm sure they are "supposed to be"! 😂

That bodes well then - she has a pretty wide barrel!

I guess it depends on your leg length, me and my friend are both 5'7 but when she rides my horses she puts the stirrups up by 3 or 4 holes because she has shorter legs and a longer body! where as I have fairly long legs!

I’m 5ft6 and didn’t actually look particularly big on my 13.2 when I lightly backed him this summer, and he’s only going to keep growing up & out! but as poster above said, depends a lot on your and their build, I’m shorter legged and longer in the body. That said at 5ft4 I’d say you’re well in range for a pony/small horse, providing you fit in a saddle that fits the horse (that’s what I usually consider to be the main limiting factor tbh). My main horse is around the 15.2-16hh mark the little chap is meant to be a useful companion 🙈😂.

IMO upper body matters more for the “look”, I’m 5ft 8 with a 32/33 inside leg and my legs look fine on my 13.2, my torso looks tall though. Last person to comment on my height said they didn’t expect me to be so tall when I got off 🤣

My 13.2 deep but not hugely wide, she’s just an average NF.

At 5ft3 you could ride almost any height without looking tall.

I’m 5ft8 and ride a 13.3. I’ve lost a bit of weight recently and I don’t care if I look too big/tall - she carries me easily. Takes up the leg too, so even my husband has a go sometimes.
