Sad news that a man who made such a difference to our knowledge of horses, their saddlery and equitation has sadly passed away last Sunday.

It would be wonderful to think that when we leave, we had contributed just a small part of what he did for horses.

That's very sad news.

I used his book 'From Paddock to Saddle' as a bible during my early learning.
A truly great horseman who will be sorely missed.

Echo what everyone has said. A great and very knowledgeable man who will be missed.

Totally agree. I worked with him as the copy editor on The Standard Guide to Horse and Pony Breeds and he was one of the most quietly knowledgeable people I have ever come across in the equestrian world.

Riding magazine never really recovered after he gave up as Editor either. Greenshires now own the title (they publish all the discipline magazines for BD, BSJA and BE) but seem unlikely ever to relaunch it, especially now the Internet is so dominant.

And does anyone remember the on-going saga of his mare Cider Rose, who developed azoturia as a 6 year old but was cured (rather appropriately) by careful doses of cider vinegar. This was at a time when 'alternative' medicine was viewed with extreme suspicion, but he always was a very forward thinking person, open to new ideas, which was probably what kept him so young for his age.

Absolutely.

I read about this earlier this morning and am saddened. He had an amazing life and always made me laugh, a true Gentleman and someone I had a great deal of respect for and am honoured to have known, he is to blame for my affinity for dachshunds, his were so adorable.

My thoughts are with his family.

I still have his book from the tv series "The Horse - and his role in the history of man" - truly a man with more than your average knowledge of horses.

IMO saddlery is still the best book on the subject ever written and i am sorry to hear sucha horseman has passed on. mind you he must have been a fair age by now!

A sad loss to the horse world. A fountain of knowledge & an advocate for the horse. He always had time to answer questions & had so many amazing stories to tell of his adventures in the horse world. It was an honour to have known him.
