HumungaHorse and I packed our truck and made our way to Little Downham in time for the lunchtime session with Nick Turner (on planning, qualifications, rules, care of the horse etc - v interesting if only for picking his brains as to how often he runs his horses, gets them fit etc). Then we were in the last group of the day, all intermediate (or thereabouts) horses (Steve GG being one of them - where's your report then?!) HH has been really annoying at home, grumpy as hell etc, and turned into Mr Angelic, keeping up with those twice his age. We did a grid on angles, figure of eight over parts of that grid, curving lines, then finished doing arrowhead, water tray, corner, all on a curving line, and reversed all that. Nothing was too big but it found us all out where our training (and riding) was lacking (enough said!)
After a lively evening chez Ure (who own Little Downham), and a rough night in my lorry (where my jimjams, 2 sleeping bags, a thermatex and a witney blanket couldn't keep me warm) the thought of Nigel Taylor at 0830hrs didn't do much for me.
However, having been Nigel a few times I knew his caring, sympathetic side was unlikely to come out, so I got on with it. I was in a more advanced group to make up the numbers so when Nigel said "so these have all done intermediate....." and I said "errr no, but he has done one novice", I knew the bar would be set quite high. Bless him, HH rose to the challenge, poo-pooed any attempts of mine to thwart his naturally bold and gutsy attitude, and was just fab. He did the intermediate fence into the water like he'd been doing it all his (five and three quarters years of) life, and bucked and bounced and generally had a great time.
When we'd finished I stayed and watched the the next couple of groups, one of which Holly_Jane was in. I'll let her report on her session, but she did a bloomin good job.
