How do you space trotting poles?

Decided to try the pony over some, and just realised that I didn't know the distances! He's 13hh with short legs... please help!

Take one big step in between each one, put him through and work out if they're right or not

I usually use 3 footsteps (ie with one foot placed directly in front of the other one), much easier to do accurately than one large step; it makes it approx 3ft/1m

Trot poles: I use 4 footsteps for my 15.3hh horse. I sometimes expand them to 5 footsteps if I want him to take bigger strides. I should think your pony would be 3-4 footsteps.
