Well, I have a 15hh Arab whos stride is very short and he tends to jog whenever I take him out on a hack in company. He walks fast enough to keep up with the other horse, its just that I cant stop him jogging!

My problem is my boobs ache when he jogs and as you can imagine if im out for more than an hour by the time I get back to the yard the ache is quite bad

Im only a C cup so its not like they are that big so I need advise on either
a) how to stop him jogging
b) any decent (not too expensive) support bras.

Thanks

M&S do a very good sports bra - which should help in the chesticle area.

As for the jogging - is he any better when he is with a slower paced horse? Maybe he is jogging to keep up??

silly question, but is it possible that your rein contact is too tight? i used to ride a pony that jogged all the time and i eventually realised that the tighter i took a hold to try and slow him down, the worse he got. by letting the contact go a bit he calmed down.
as for the aching chest, i use a shockabsorba sports bra which is fab, they are usually quite dear by my local co-op sells them for £6! might be worth a look.

sorry, had a bit of a giggle at that, but to make you not feel so on the spot, i sometimes have the same issue, i never ride without a bra on as they seem to have a mind of their own when set free and jiggle uncomfortably the whole time i ride, i bet thats an attractive image!! sports bras are the way to go, theres so many of them!!

jogging horse, i agree with amymay, they might feel left behind, when i went on a hack with a yard mate, it was all on the roads, and whenever we turned down another road, her horse would bend well, but he has a faster pace than Liberty and libs cuts a massive corner everytime to catch up, diagonally across all cars! i tried to bend her but as we didnt turn many corners before we got back, i didnt have time to school her with it properly. push him into a trot, keep him trotting and when he wants to walk, dont let him, keep trotting, then ask him to walk, if he jogs, trot him again, he will get so bored or tired he will eventually walk, and in the school work on a longer strided walk to let him catch up!

sports bra! and as for the jogging i had an arab quite a few years ago now but he jogged alot too was worse in company but would still do it out on his own if the mood took him long rein short rein nothing worked so judt ignored him completely and tried to think of something else sorry thats not much help as u often come back more tired than they do lol

Definitely agree with the sports bra, the M&S ones are the best I think.

My pony Ella use to jog all the time because we use to ride out with horses and she was only 14’3hh she use to jog to keep up. What’s your ned like when you ride out on your own? Ella use to walk quite happily on her own so I knew she was just doing it to keep up.

The jogging habit is a tricky one to break, it depends how long the horse has been doing it for. I once had a pony that never stopped jogging!!

There are a few re-schooling things you can try, also by putting the horse infront helps. Its a matter of patience and takes a long time to sort out this type of offender. Good luck

RE. Jogging....

My cob was so so bad at jogging when i first got her and just would not walk at all (you wouldn't think it looking at her). She'd hunted all her life and i know for a fact her owner never walked her and galloped every where.

Anyway the way i got her to stop it was to make her halt and if neccessary rein back. Every time she jogged she would be halted then rein backed. She soon got the mesage. It takes time but it didn't take too long. Also if you have a big space turning them from the direction that you are going in is another good one, so you go in the opposite dirsection every time they jog. It works with dogs that pull on a lead as well, lol.

I actually got the technique from Dr Andrew McClean, who is a top behaviourist expert and did a demo at the global dressage conference. It's also brilliant for schooling if you have a horse who leans and rushes.

So if you halt the horse and it walks on without you giving the aid you rein back. If the horse goes faster than you aked it too, you rein back.

He came and did some demos with student horses at college it was amazing. He starts on the ground. He said everyone thinks its so sweet that their horse follows them, but actually its wrong. Your horse should only walk on when told (contact on the lead rope) if the horse walks on without this contact you make the horse walk backwards by tapping the front legs. Once you can 'park' (being able to walk away from the horse without it moving) the horse you're there. Honestly it was so cool.

One of my friends had this mare who just would not load, on a good day it would take 3 hours. After Andrew did this ground work the horse first heistated to get on the box, but then went straight on. Since then she loads first time with no heistation! How amazing is that.

Also another girl had a SJer who jogged everywhere and if it did not get its own way went straight up. Andrew first did some ground work and then spent about half an hour riding her. By the end of the session this mare was calmly walking, trotting and cantering- in an outline!!!! Andrew even let go of the reins and she remained in the same rhythm. Amy spoke after and she was gob smacked, she said she'd never got her in an outline and never seen her so calm. Andrew then got Amy to ride and again she was brilliant. This mare has gone from strength to strength since.

Anyway, sorry to go on so long, i know not everyone would agree with this, its just my opinion. But it does work.

Hope this helps

Our Arab used to jog and the way my mum got him out of it was to give him his head, take her feet out of her stirrups, drop all her weight in the saddle and sing (I think the singing helped relax mum and the horse in turn).... he never does it now.

Btw he also likes to be in front and goes along with his ears flat back if he has to walk behind another one.

This is excatly what Lorian does. I've tried long reins and short reins and neither make any difference. He jogs when hes on his own too sometimes depending on his mood. I think he does jog as he thinks hes being left behind but when he does walk instead of jog he can keep up so there is no need for him to jog. Its just getting him to walk properly that I cant do.
Hopefully I will try one of these sports bras and that should start to help the problem.
Thanks for everyones replys
