god dam I demand a recount!!. I might have got somewhere. Although this wasn't BSJ & it was 10 years ago. Don't know what rules they were using back then
I think one of my most embarressing show moments was a very early local show with my now ancient horse. We were showjumping quite happily until after a line of jumpts I asked him to turn left but he declined the invitation so we carried on straight out over the string roping off the arena and a woman sitting eating her lunch!
I then trotted back round to the entrance and had to ask to be let back in so I could complete my round!!!!
At the same show we then entered the open and were going fine until we got to a double. He said no at the 1st part, I shot over his head, then he decided that it wasn't so bad and jumped it landing all over me and the commentator announced that Ms H..... and 'Dances on People' were retiring, much to the hilarity of everyone watching!!!!!
I've done a million other majorly embarressing things at shows but its all good fun!
I think I was about 6 when it happened. Up until this point I was always in lead line classes with my aunt leading. I never had a pony so always showed on great bit Quarter horses with a pony saddle on them (it was an interesting sight but I always placed well)
This class was my very first all by myself. It was a Western pleasure class and I was on my aunts Quarter horse. He was a seasoned show horse and I guess everyone thought he would do it all for me *giggle*
It was chaos
He kept seeing my aunt outside of the ring and kept leaving the circle and going up to her. Try as I might my little arms could not pull him back. He was determined to go to my aunt.
I eventually got him back in line and we were going well. Then a gust of wind blew up and my cowboy hat went flying off.
All I can remember is everyone laughing and i felt so stupid. It must have been a cute sight but I wanted so badly to do a great job that I felt horrible.
Years ago when doing the "mirror" race ponio did his "gymkhana" style start - think fatish 14.2hh bouncing up & down facing away from the jumps - then we jumped the first two & last two fences of the other persons course - before they got there !! Got eliminated as expected but laughed myself silly.
And ponio smashing a pole at another comp.
Both in front of my SJ trainer !! He did ask me NOT to tell anyone he taught me !!
Enjoy yourself.
Horse 1 - Doing a BE event a few years ago on a particularily windy day. Dressage arena was beside trees... horse was fine throughout test until I came down the centre line at the end, took my hand off the rein to salute and he went nuts - he lept what felt like 10 feet sideways and up at the same time neatly depositing me on the floor at G and then galloping flat out out of the arena and grinding to a halt in front of my mum in the practice area! That wasnt a good day!
Horse 2 - Doing our very first event on my very first "proper" horse (from ponies) was horrendous. It was dressage outdoors and I think we spent more time outside of the arena than in it (it was a little PC thing so they let me continue), when we were in the arena he would grind to a halt and refuse to move or canter sideways! I believe I got something like 40% which I think was MORE than kind!
Horse 2 - Was having an "off" day at BSJA where basically he threw me off at the FIRST fence in BOTH classes. I think thats when I decided to sell him as competing clearly wasn't his thing!
Horse 3 - I used to have the best jumping pony, he was highland but somehow he could turn on a sixpence and jump at any angle in jump offs, yet he was very carefuly with it. Doing a jump off once I remember I asked him to turn in mid-air, but when we landed he turned way too quickly so I went out the side door. Could blame him at all, he did what I asked just a bit TOO well. I remember it as my now-boyfriend was at the event and saw it!
I was once at a pony club show with my tiny monster of a pony, he was well known for being the most idle creature around. Anyway, to my shock he galloped round the full course (giving us a great clear round but apparently people forgot about this due to the look of total shock on my face) only to swerve at the last jump, I stayed on and tried the jump again, that time he swerved and threw a little buck at the same time, I knew I was going to fall if I didn't do something so I ended up vaulting off him and catching him whilst at full gallop. The comment I got at the end from the leader of the club was..."I think you two may be more suited to the circus than jumping, but well done for keeping us all entertained!"
) and someone told me about this. I was competing Antifaz, all done up in pink and someone in the stands was heard to comment "Nice horse, but WHY that colour?" to which my friend replied "She's English" to which the response was "Ohhhhh" and matters were settled
When I was about 11, at my first real show off the lead rein, horse being soo good, and it was a very hot day soo took my hacking jacket off for about 2 minutes before going in to the ring, blooming mare choose that exact second to throw a massive buck out of nowhere and drop me and pristine white shirt into the sheep poo and bolted back to the box.
Many years ago we took the long trip from surrey to longwood (or hardwood - I forget now) do do some showjumping. YO, one of the other liveries and his partner and me.
We got there for a 9am start but being idiots no one had checked the schedule, and it was junior bsja in the morning, seniors in the afternoon.
Much to our delight we found the bar was soon to open, so settled horses with some haynets, and had a light refreshment, then another, and another...
I had to wait ages for the newcomers, and by the time it was time to warm up, I was decidely worse for wear. I got on my little mare and had a couple of pops then into the ring. In my state I forgot I was riding the green one, she gave me a brilliant feel over the first few fences, and for no 4 I just let her trundle into it like I would have my older mare, she spooked and I sailed over the fence on my own.
Got back on jumped the next few, then at the turn to the 2nd last, bit of miscommunication, she turned sharper than I anticipated, I continued in a straight line and ate sand again.
Got back on again, jumped the second last lovely, then she locked onto the 3rd fence backwards which was next to the last, tried to check her, failed, but managed to make the poor mare stop, and I sailed over that fence as well.
Got up and took a bow to a round of applause (I have no idea why people were clapping, it must have looked disgraceful) and led her out, eliminated.
Enough of my judgement came back for me to withdraw from the foxhunter, and I have to say, I was thoroughly embarrassed and ashamed.
We went show jumping a few months ago, hacked down and decided to do whatever was on and he was perfect in the warm up, really enthusiastic but careful. Went in the ring, cantered around on the bit ears pricked, going forwards, lovely & bouncy, cantered right up to the fist jump with a good, straight line and much enthusiasm then WHAM! He slammed the brakes on at the very last second, it was so unexpected I shot forwards and hung around his neck!
It was only 26! I smacked his bottom, he jumped it like there were tigers under it, and then did the same thing at the second I threatened to tether him at the side of the road on the way home, it was so embarrassing. He then went to the VWH ride and jumped everything, including their big, solid stone walls. Horses, aye?
I did your worse case scenario last year - Big hunter refused a jump I ended up on her neck she panicked started spinning and I flew off (long way down from 17hh).
Luckily for me the show photographer got an amazing action shot of me flying off and a close up or my arse on the way and in humour developed it and stuck it to the side of his van at the show and it was there for every shopw for the reast of the season as a reminder!!!!
I look back on it and it was funny but I was embarrassed at the time!!
Mine has to be at a show we hosted for our riding school and livery clients. Staff were not allowed to compete, so once we had walked the courses with our regulars, we settled in to the smirnoff
All was going well until one of the horses showed someone up XC, he was a star jumper but he was just taking the mickey. Boss insisted someone get on and jump the horse round. All of the instructors refused (quite rightly) to go XC drunk, so he told us we had to pop around the pony SJ instead. Given I was the only one with the correct footwear (johd boots and jeans as opposed to shorts and flip flops) I did it. Horse jumped 70% of the course, then decided he didn't fancy it anymore, and swerved away, heading for his home field. Which would have been fine, had there not have been a 5' thin nylon blue rope across to stop people entering the SJ arena. Given I wasn't entirely sober, I reasoned we didn't have space to stop, so I gave him a bit of a pony club kick to tell him to take off, and bless him, he cleared it with room to spare. Boss was happy, tried telling everyone it was planned to show that horse could jump 5' (as opposed to drunk instructor's screwy logic - there is no way I would have done that sober, but thinking about it, he would have flipped himself if he had hit it at speed, so probably a good instinct overall!) It took me a long time to live it down.
I took my section d to a little baby XC when he was about five, it was only things like sleepers and tyres around two small fields of a local livery yard. He flew round, had the time of his life. At the finish I was self congratulating myself, it was the first time I'd ever done XC and our first "outing", when he got down to roll, in front of everyone, with me on top! I had to have a quiet word with him on the hack home, and explain that you wait until mommy's got off in future!
