Bit of a tricky one as the mare in question isn't mine, but I am trying to help a friend come up with some options for her mare.

So a good friend of mine has a 12 (I think) year old 16h mare, she has already had a foal 4 years ago with no complications, and by all accounts was a good mum. Without going into too much detail, I would like to try and help my friend come up with a solution to her problem.

So my key question is, what is the process/protocol/requirements of putting a mare on loan to a stud type yard to be an embryo transfer recipient mare - so to be there mare to carry the foal. She seems to think this might be an option but has no idea where to start.

Thank you :)

Fill in a form on their website usually with your contact details and the mares details (height, age, breeding, veterinary history, if roughed off or not) and they get in contact with you if she's suitable.
Generally they need to be 16hh minimum, not too fine and relatively well bred, and field sound without any potentially genetic health issues. Maidens are ok but so are mares who've foaled previously. Unshod or able to go unshod sound, good in field with other horses, good to handle and a generally amicable temperament are also required.

Off the top of my head there's Tomlinson equine and Twemlows that take recipients. I know they're not the only ones but my mind's gone blank on the names of the others ?

Brilliant, thank you. It was also know what Stud's actually use recipient mares. Neither of us are breeders at all, she just bred the mare to keep the foal.

There are loads of studs doing embryo transfer work. Go onto Facebook, British Breeders and post that the mare is available.
