I’m curious if anyone here has firsthand experience with embryo transfer and using a surrogate mare. It’s a procedure I’m thinking about for my mare in a couple years but I’d like to hear thoughts/experiences from someone who has tried it or seriously considered it.

Yes, done it twice, worked first time both times with just one recipient mare and got two lovely babies. Sadly lost one at 18months but the other is now 5 and a lovely mix of his parents and the recip mare (whose temperament was a lot nicer than the donor!)

It is expensive, especially if you have multiple recipients and it doesn’t work first go. Use a specialist vet only- someone who does ETs everyday

That’s so interesting. I have read that you want the recipient mare to have a good temperament.
Sounds good, I will definitely be using a specialist vet.

I’m at the stage of waiting for the actual transfer (3 days to go) my older 14 maiden mare has had fluid after AI. Recip is behaving perfectly and is one day behind donor! Just wondering what your donor mare fertility likelyhood was and if you also had fluid post AI? I’m ?for an embryo to be found but not massively hopeful x

I did it with work multiple times, I would recommend sending the mare to a centre that has many recipient mares as it is easier to get a source a mare that is sync'd with yours. Although be very firm on what sort of mare you get. We were breeding racing Arabs and had all sorts of mares from 14.2hh feral maiden ponies to 17hh warmblood experienced mare.

My mare pooled a bit of fluid and stud put her on an oxytocin protocol which worked well- successful flush

Oh that is positive news! I have to say I was a bit disheartened but she has also had a lavage and Oxytocin…fingers crossed ? I’m sensibly realistic though - even in the perfect conditions that breeding lark is far from guaranteed! ?
