I'm considering it next year for my mare, i don't want to take her out of competition but she is well bred and i would love a foal from her as i now have the facilities available, i'm just wondering if it would be worth all the money, i have heard very mixed reviews on the subject! I have some frozen semen but is this less likely to work in embryo transfer?

It would be just as likely to produce a pregnancy as it would be in a normal situation, but you need to take into account the fact that you may need to take more than just one embryo from your mare to make it work, as there is a chance that the embryo will not survive the transfer every time.

IMO it is well worth the money, and is becoming more and more popular!

Have you got mares pregnant using this frozen semen? Does the stallion freeze well? The problem with using frozen semen for ET can arise if: the semen wasn't frozen well or if the stallion's semen is not particularly fertile after thawing: this is due to the fact that damage to the sperm (especially to the genetic material) will reduce the change of fertilisation occuring, and even if it does, the embryo may die or be reabsorbed (probably due to chromosomal abnormalities).

Problems can also arise where a stud/ET centre is not experienced with frozen semen, and therefore have low success rates with frozen semen (or, may as bbmat says, refuse to offer the ET service with frozen semen).

Using frozen semen will reduce the chance of a successful flush and transfer.

However, the technology is fantastic and most specialist places in the UK have very good success rates. Go for it, but be aware that it may take a few cycles to get a positive result using frozen semen.

The total cost from most places is between £1500 and £3000 for a succesful 45-60 day pregnancy in the recipient mare, plus the rental of the recipient mare which is normally in the region of £1500.

I know that there is at least one centre which will be offering the total package for around £1500 from next stud season

, or less if you have your own recipient.

I think the problem is that 1) repro/AI centres in the UK are too greedy. 2) they use methods that require them to run a herd of recipients. This "other" centre, uses a more modern method requiring only 1-2 recipient mares per donor.

it is flemmingh semen, i have spoken to a few people who say their mare took first time? Are their any specialist centres in the midlands/worcestershire area?

Andy Pandy Are you allowed to say which centre is doing the embryo transfer for around £1500? we have a 19 yr old talented ex competition mare who throws cracking foals, but we would hate anything to happen to her foaling. She cycles well etc and except for last year when she had an infection has got in foal 1st time each year. just wondering about how successful ET would be in an older mare? What do you think

I'm sure that with good management, she would have every chance. I use treatments which increase the chance of flushing multiple embryos, which would probably work very well with her. The difficult part is the transfer of the embryos, and getting the recipients to hold onto them! PM me for details of the centre which does ET for around £1500 - I don't like mentioning names on here, as some people get funny about it
