Emergency, can be short term gateway mud

MC mats defo. I have a big area with them and this year hardcored 2 other areas as "cheaper". Bl**dy horses have dug up the membrane under the hardcore already.

We get something here called ‘chip and dust’ from the local quarry - it’s smallish stones with sand mixed in. I’ve used that as it compacts really well. If you put down a hardcore of whatever you can get - drive over it to tamp it down as a firm bed, then top with sand for smoothness to protect potential sore feet.

If you make it slightly more raised in the worse areas than the surrounding land, it’ll always drain and be solid. Whereas if you throw hardcore into a boggy patch that’s level or lower than surrounding land, it’s more likely to get mixed up if water collects there, and become a stony-muddy mess. Also over time mud comes off their feet on the way in, and lands on paths, which can create a top layer of mud over hardcore, over time. Whereas if the hardcore path is raised, mud on the hardcore eventually gets washed-off by rains, especially if the hardcore/sand area has a slight slope.

MC ones are expensive, however they will send out any quantity so you can just order what you need, also they hold their value, in fact some of mine that I sold when I moved I sold for more than I paid for them 😁 there are some MC FB groups if you want to snoop and also sometimes there are second hand ones for sale 😊

The MC distributer is a friend of mine. I'm sure you could collect in northampton to make them cheaper. Delivery gets expensive and bumps the price up.

we have road plannings and they are amazing. jay only has front shoes and has never ever had any issues with them. he has a large plinth to stand of (i suspect you might see it from space) but works a treat, no more standing in the mud
All our yard gateways had road planings put down, as well as the hardstanding in front of the yard , over the years it did grow grass through but it meant that the horses had a choice about standing in mud and the area was large enough for us to get them in and out of the field without losing wellies in the mud that was there before
