My daughter (14yrs) has just talked in length about her decision to move up from her 14h pony to 15'2. She has had him for over 3 years & really does not want to sell him on but bravely asked that we might consider another horse. We are looking at options of loaning him, getting sharer etc. I am overwhelmed as I really thought she would not consider getting anything to replace him. OMG do we really have to start looking at other horses! We already have two other youngsters which we are helping to bring on 15'2 & 16'2 but these are so green, I think it would be better to loan / buy something which will give her the experience now (been there & done it) as it will be 18mnths or so before the youngsters are ready. Has anyone else loaned an experienced first horse for the same reason as I would rather not buy to sell on in a couple of years. Thoughts please & any recommendations on where I should start looking for a first horse. Thanks

Definately loan, I loaned all my horses untill 19. I always got brilliant horses. My first was 15yo when got him and 15 hh. He was great, kept going strong for 6 yrs and taught me loads. One after was 19! and he was full of life. I had all the advantage of the horses experience without the initial pay out.
Try the pony club website, pcuk.org. or word of mouth, riding school or even the local hunt to get contacts. There are always outgrown (in size or ability) horse looking for interim homes before they are ready to retire.
