I am up to my eyes at the moment with the livery (having 8 horses, possibly soon 9 and doing them all part livery by myself). So I often get people emailing me looking for work, but if I were to employ a groom for 2 - 3 hours a day, what sort of things do I need to know? What about insurance? NI etc?Who would I need to inform? Thanks

ETA: And what is the going rate?

2-3 hours a day you would be better off using a self-employed freelancer.
They should then be responsoible for their accounting, insurance et. plus if they are off sick or up duff you have no responsibility to pay them anything!
 
You can phone up the jobcentre and they will tell you, if the person is only working for you, and you provide the tools, then you can easily end up as an employer. By the way, an oap may be the answer ....... they don't pay NI and have a special tax threshold, and they may be more reliable.

This what I would do in your shoes Wagtail .
My insurance was simple as all the horses are mine you may need different as yours is a commercial enterprise the NFU are always good for this type of thing.
 
Thank you. That is really useful information. I will have a look and see if there are any freelance grooms available for the times I would need them.

Agree with this too. I'm freelance so have to have own insurance, do my own accounts and tax and NI and as I've been off sick I loose income but clients don't loose money for work not done
