I have a private yard, no liveries and I am looking for someone to help me on about 10 hours a week so I am looking at insurance. I have two quotes between
£500-800 for one employee. Can anyone better this?

Having employed people in the past in my home but in a different capacity to what you are wanting. Mine was covered for employers liability under my own home insurance. All I had to do is tell them the person's name and I was covered automatically at no additional cost.

Your house insurance usually only covers you for domestic employees, such as housekeeper, carers.
As it is a yard not attached to my main residence I need employers liability insurance. I already have employed someone who is self employed, any injury classed as negligence she would have to claim on my third party insurance, which I already have.

Simply Business is a broker, try them, you need to keep it all down to the essentials, I know NFU quoted me £2400 for something not suitable, and I got insurance [liability] for £60 pa at Simply Business.

Could you take on someone self employed who would have their own insurance?

You cannot use "self employed" to swerve your "employer responsibilites" [not being unpleasant]: to be self employed the person would have to prove that she did this as a business, had other clients , provided own tools etc........... and then she needs to pay insurance!

Part time help on a self employed basis was covered under my NFU home policy as are cleaners ,window cleaners etc .
It's the type of cover that is geared around homes with land , equestrian use type homes.

We've got our insurance with County Insurance (website here: www.countyins.com). They saved us a fortune compared to NFU and the service has seemed good so far. My friend swapped to them too. She has a small business with 4 employees and her PL & EL cover cost her about £150.
