Hi,

I was wondering how people go about employing someone for permanent yard help?

I have a super small yard of two ponies and require help in the mornings Mon-Fri, that will involve a muck out, Topping up waters and haynets and turning them out. No rug changes or anything else. It takes me 45 mins as one is a super small 10h shetland.

How much would people expect to pay? I've been quoted £30 a day!

Most freelancers will quote by the hour regardless if the job can be done in less time.

I'd agree that £20-25 would be about right as the freelancer needs to take into account their travel time, fuel, insurance NI contributions etc into their chargeable rate.

If you need regular help, I found Assisted DIY/part/full livery works out cheaper long term than using a freelancer.

I'm not on a yard - I've got my horses at my parents home but they aren't horsey!

For a fully insured freelancer, I've been paying a minimum of £20 for morning chores for my 2 ponies when I was sidelined, or £30 a day as afternoons take only 15 mins, it's more the inconvenience for them to swing by in the afternoons.
Takes a total of 30 mins for me to do actual morning chores inc waters, making feeds, haynets etc and another 10 tops to be keeping the muck heap tidy and sweeping down yard.
It very much depends on distance for some, I struck lucky with a friends groom who passes the lane to my yard twice daily on weekdays.

I had been quoted £10 by one but they had no insurance and flimsy references.

I suspected you probably weren't on a yard by the fact you're looking for freelance groom :) But it was to give you an idea of the comparative costs as it's easy to first think 'Gosh, £30 is expensive compared to the £3 I know people pay for a turnout on a yard' (for example).

Having horse's on a private yard and employing help will (in my experience) always be more expensive than being on a yard with services or different livery offered.

Thinking of training my mum up. It won't be an issue when I move closer to

If you were in the village here you'd be paying £25/day for that, and if the FL had to drive to you it would be £30 (again, for a good FL with all the credentials).

Probably a good idea to make sure your parents' house insurance covers them for PL and for employing casuals (like a cleaner or a gardener, not in connection with a business).

You’ll need a minimum of £20/day for a freelancer, but it might be it’s not worth their while for that, so I’m not surprised at a £30 quote
