I have a companion Pony with EMS. She lost weight 40kg) no cresty neck or fat padd now. She-is on ivoknakans/ soaked hay / small feed with supplements/ muzzle/ restricted grass

Her insulin levels are high still

Her bed is very wet. I wondered if it was a symptom or something else. She doesn't drink a lot of water but does have soaked feed/hay. For a small pony, it seems rather excessive.

I have taken the salt out and giving her salt in a morning feed

Any other ideas? She's regularly checked by the vet and well otherwise.

What does the vet say about the insulin levels being high still, despite invokana?

I'd let her have free access to salt still.

They do wee more when their sugar levels are high - it's the body's way of trying to get rid of it. I'd leave a salt lick with her.

What are her insulin levels? How long are you soaking hay for?

One of the side effects of the diabetes drugs can be increased drinking and increased weeing. They are weeing out the excess glucose, lowering insulin levels.

Mine is on ertugliflozin and the bed is much wetter than before. I complained to the vet that not only is the drug expensive, the bedding bill has increased too! However for mine the drug has worked as insulin levels have lowered. I did read it doesn’t work for all horses.

How have you been getting on since the time you posted?

On the advice of another vet some horses don’t get their levels completely down. I have carried on with good management - muzzle/soaked hay and farrier 6 weekly.
The game changer has been auboise. It has made such a difference for us.

Yes, I know someone whose horse did not get levels below 30 on the medication. Glad to hear managment is working right now.

I also use chopped rape, with a layer of straw pellets undrneath in the wee spot area added in to boot.
