I will be having my pony tested for EMS (the fasting version) soon. I do not have a stable but can fence off the field shelter overnight. She does not like being kept in but it is necessary for this test so that she can be starved prior to having the glucose which I will give her at about 7am.

My question is - once she has had the glucose, can she then have some feed to keep her occupied until the vet comes at 9am to take the test? Just thinking ahead. I will of course check with the vet when I book the test.

Hi,
My boy has EMS and has had the test twice. They are to have had no food for 6 hours before you give the feed with Glucose in and then do not have anything else to eat either hay, feed,or grass until the vet has taken the blood test.I normally do a 9am appointment and feed at 7am.Good luck.

Thanks fusspot. Not what I was hoping to hear. Just got to hope she won't break out before the vet gets there!

I know this might sound a bit silly but if they need to only have no food for 6 hours why not bring her in early say 7am in the morning and then do the test at 1pm then she won't need to be in so long.
