Panacur 5 Day and Equest are the only ones I am aware of that treat encysted redworm.
Found this on a worming website 'Active ingredients that treat for adult and pinworm larvae are Moxidectin, Ivermectin, Febendazole and Mebendazole with Pyrantel treating adults only. Not all brands are licensed so care needs to be taken by checking the brand’s label.'
What is the difference between red worms and encysted red worm? I get so confused over wormers and wanted an alternative to Equest, hence bying Eqvalan…..
They are the same worms of course. Part of the life cycle of the redworm involves burrowing into the gut wall, sometimes for only a couple of weeks and sometimes for over two years. These are the encysted worms. Most horses should have a winter dose to remove them otherwise they can cause problems by all emerging at once in spring. Currently only moxidectin and 5 days of fenbendazole are licensed to treat them, so they are your winter wormer choices.
Eqvalan is a good wormer for some situations but not this one.
Just to let you know my mare came with pin worm, lots of them! I had never seen them before and only found out because she was so itch. Anyway I wormed her once and they all went away, so they can go with just one treatment. The only thing is I can't remember which wormer I used, sorry.
For pinworm ,My vet gave me a lotion which we wiped round bum and dock for one month after worming with panacur five day .
I thought it was invermectin lotion but seeing BR's post I am must have that wrong
It might have been ivermectin Goldenstar. The issue with oral ivermectin and moxidectin is that they seem to be absorbed before reaching the pinworm in the hind gut.
