My horse has been back in work since Christmas. I had the chiropractor out to him last night and she has suggested putting ?something? on his right hind leg to encourage better use of the limb (he has a sacroilliac problem - which she has treated him for throughout). I have spoken with my vet this morning and she agrees that now would be a good time to start doing this.

Has anyone used this method? And if so, what did you put on the horses leg?

It has also been suggested to use magnetic boots on him behind - like a leg wrap, any recommendations?

Thanks for reading!

Does she mean a weighted training boot? to encourage the limbs to flex more? - if used for the right reason they can be good but has the Vet ruled out other hindlimb probs first as the cause of the sacroiliac probs ie hocks/suspensories before suggesting use of these boots? as IMO could put pressure on an already sore joint and cause further probs. One of my boys has had a slight sacroiliac prob too and I'd want to be sure!. Lots of backing the horse up will help free the sacroiliac/back too.

You can get magnetic rugs or the Ceramic Back on track back pads/leg wraps/rugs look ok too however I've not tried them-sorry! but good luck with it and hope he gets better soon.

Thanks K27.

I don't think it needs to be weighted, we need to give the horse a distraction when using that leg. My horse did have injuries to both suspensories and sacroilliac, he had surgery on the suspensories and this was successful, however following this the sacroilliac became more of an issue. He had an injection into the joint which encouraged it to fuse and at a check up at the beginning of Dec 08 (for something else) Rossdales were happy with him behind, he just avoids using the joint correctly.

All these issues were dealt with over a year ago, but last year he came down with laminitis so had a well deserved rest!

Aww bless him- sounds like he's gone through a lot!

Good Luck!- I'm considering using the back on track pad on my boy, but not sure whether it will help though but heres their website if you wanted to read up

Other than a weighted training boot, or using a boot/polo bandage on one leg, or even a sausage boot, I can't think of anything else that could be used- but I'm sure there are some clever people here and someone else here can!!

gd luck!

Found long reining brilliant, it really helped my horses rehab and now that he is more relaxed have introduced a very very loose pessoa once or twice a week and it seems to have really helped to encourage longer back end stride and over track, might be worth a go trying to seeing if it helps encourage the movement behind as this will help stretch and strengthen supporting muscles
