Today I've decided to venture out hacking from home. I've never hacked out from here because I have always been told how bad the road is etc etc.

However this is a) from people who don't ride and b) people who worry about everything! Plenty of people DO hack/cycle and dog walk up this road - so it isn't like the main road to hell

So I'm going to get hi-vizzed up and take my mare for a short hack up the road. It's a fairly steep hill so we wont be able to go far as she isn't fit and our land borders the route (for quick escape if needs be!)

Anyway, I've notified best friend, got my hi viz - any other words of wisdom before I set off into the unknown?

And lastly a question, do you feel it's appropriate to take the middle of the road on parts, while walking back down as that side of the road runs along a steep drop on parts?

The only thing I would add is a dog tag with contact numbers on, attach it to a saddle ring. We have them and it makes me feel better!

Middle of the road depends on the straightness or otherwise of it, i.e. would a driver/cyclist/etc. see you in time?

Hope you go and all is well :D

How bad can it be ? Whereabouts are you based? I don't much care for hacking on roads but mostly so far most people are reasonably cautious when passing us. I've just bought a longer whip and it's not for the GG..will tie fluorescent ribbon to the end and keep it vertical..just in case.

I always recommend a long sleeved Hi-Viz jacket so that other road users can clearly see your hand signals from a distance. If the road surface is slippery have road nails put in the rear shoes (one on each side of the shoe). Also put knee pads on your horse just incase it slips on the road.

Got an awesome Hi viz jacket, but great point.

South east wales, at the base of a massive forestry. Its NOT that bad, it's just the older, non riding contingent of the family think it is!:)

I thought that maybe with your user name that you might be in Ireland. I've hacked put there a few times and wasn't too impressed with the speed they whizzed by at. Especially the locals, who seem to assume that because they are trekking horses that they don't mind traffic.
