Hi y'all. Has anybody got any tips on encouraging mane and tail hair to grow? This might be a bit long!
My boy is a traditional coloured cob so the hairier the better but he's managed to lose a chunk out of his mane. It's between the main bulk of the hair and the withers (which is also a bit short due to a high neck winter rug) and looks as if it's literally had a chunk ripped out of it!
This is probably been done by one of the other horses as he's very playful and I've often seen him and the other boys grabbing each other one top of the neck.
His tail has been rubbed but it doesn't seem to be sweet itch, or at least not like any I've seen before. He seems to have rubbed one little area, about 6 inches from the top of his tail, enough to make it scab slightly but not too much, but it's removed some of the hair. I'm wondering if it's just due to there being a lot of midges around and as he really likes having his back end scratched anyway, he's got a bit carried away. He's done it once before and I'm pretty sure it was around this time of year, but he only did it once and didn't bother again so I don't think it's an ongoing problem. I put some cut cream on the scab (it's like a very shallow graze) so it doesn't get infected and put some aloe vera gel on the area to sooth it.
Anyway - any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
