Hi y'all. Has anybody got any tips on encouraging mane and tail hair to grow? This might be a bit long!

My boy is a traditional coloured cob so the hairier the better but he's managed to lose a chunk out of his mane. It's between the main bulk of the hair and the withers (which is also a bit short due to a high neck winter rug) and looks as if it's literally had a chunk ripped out of it!

This is probably been done by one of the other horses as he's very playful and I've often seen him and the other boys grabbing each other one top of the neck.
His tail has been rubbed but it doesn't seem to be sweet itch, or at least not like any I've seen before. He seems to have rubbed one little area, about 6 inches from the top of his tail, enough to make it scab slightly but not too much, but it's removed some of the hair. I'm wondering if it's just due to there being a lot of midges around and as he really likes having his back end scratched anyway, he's got a bit carried away. He's done it once before and I'm pretty sure it was around this time of year, but he only did it once and didn't bother again so I don't think it's an ongoing problem. I put some cut cream on the scab (it's like a very shallow graze) so it doesn't get infected and put some aloe vera gel on the area to sooth it.

Anyway - any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I'm not so sure if Camrosa is supposed to encourage hair growth, I know lots of people swear by it. Maybe worth looking them up?

Hi, my tb mare loves to rub her tail. Always has done at this time of year...no reason for it - had it all checked before. I found her the other day as I walked in rubing it on the back of her stable...her face was a picture!!!
No matter if I wash it or whatever she still does it.
I use benzyl benzoate - you buy it in chemists - and just dab it on the area rubbed.
Strangely I use Phaser fly repellent and at times this seems to stop her as well if I put it round the top of the tail. This is unscientific but I am seeing how it goes!!!

I had exactly the same prob when my horse's tail bandage fell off in the trailer and he rubbed it on the ramp. It was bleeding and then went all scabby. I cleaned it up with hibiscrub and once it had scabbed over nicely started rubbing Cornucresin (normally you use it for hoof growth) in it every night. It has now started to grow back with a vengeance and the bald patch is completely covered, although I think the length will take a while to come back.

I use megatek rebuilder on my trad - he grows over an inch a month. Also great on tails and feather - if you show and want super conditioned hair.

I never use neck covers on my trad - his mane is too precious.

I also bag my trad's mane and tail - you can get all the stuff I mention from tailgator.co.uk. They also do a great shampoo for itchy horses and if you have lots of long hair, their survivor detangler is the best you can buy - and I have tried them all.
