Encysted Red Worm - torn with what to do.

Good morning, I wondered if someone could possibly give me some advice on one in for encysted red worm. My mare hasn’t been wormed for encysted red for quite some time, entirely my fault. Other worm counts have been low including tape worm.

The reason for my question is I am now concerned, following a high blood test worm count result, that worming with a equest would be too much for her system at 25 years old with a history of colic. I just wondered what others have done in a similar situation. I was thinking of doing 5 day panacur to be on the safe side as Equest seems to have a reputation for being quite strong. Any advice would be hugely appreciated!!!

Many thanks
Georgina

Me too. My vet sometimes uses Equest alongside steroids for unwormed rescue cases.

That said, we did the blood test last winter and some of our regularly wormed horses were very high. We even discussed it with the lab as couldn't understand why it was the case. Unfortunately seems like we have a "high burden field" despite proper maintenance and care. We've never "seen" a problem or had high worm counts, so go figure! (We always do encysted in Winter so I guess we get them out before they cause a problem, but does rather feel like a ticking time bomb!)

Definitely 5 day panacur. It is reported to be one of the safest to use. Ive used it myself on horses and not had a bad reaction. I found put into feed in liquid form worked very well, even for the most fusiest of horses. Just set a reminder on your phone etc so you dont miss a dose, as easy to forget 5 days.

Thank you! I’m so glad I double checked with vet. The first advised Equest but didn’t take note of any history of Lady. After checking with other vet, friends, Westgate and you guys I will definitely do Panacur. Thanks!

My mare is odd. 5 day panacur gave her colic but she’s fine with Equest Pramox. A friend recently had a young horse with a really high burden. I was surprised that the vet said to give Pramox and pony was fine, despite the amount of worms that came out of him.

They’re all so different aren’t they. I guess it’s a risk either way but will go with the lowest risk!

Vet used to get us to use 5 day Panacur then follow up with Equest Pramox for horses with unknown worming history or high worm burdens. I've just done exactly that with the new pony before she went out in a field with mine.

5 day panacur, followed by tape wormer a couple of weeks later, followed by a worm count after that, then reassess.

I had one come home from loan with a cont of 1800 and it took months to get him clear, using worm counts and different wormers.
