Now my horse is semi-retired and we are no longer going out and about, I recently made the sad decision to sell my trailer and towing car 😢 I have so many wonderful memories and it really feels like the end of an era but I only used the trailer twice in a year and it doesn't make sense to run a big car for the other 363 days of the year unnecessarily.

I've sold the trailer to a friend but I'm now looking to sell my car. I'd prefer to sell it privately for a better price. Has anyone managed to sell a big towing car privately and do you have any recommendations of where to advertise? Has anyone had any luck with ebay or gumtree or got a decent price off one of the online companies e.g. Motorway?

I sold my Sierra Sapphire and Peugeot 406 towing vehicles on the notice board at the local riding club. The Peugeot I asked £450 for it and I could have sold ten times over such was the demand. They both had towbars with electrics in working order.

My Vauxhall Vectra I sold via FB or FB marketplace, I can't remember which now. I was gutted as it had a 4 CD interchanger which was stuck and no amount of tools would remove it, it had three brand new CD's in there too! That also had a fixed towbar. Towbars don't seem to put people off like we expected. Grr

I think I got £570 for the Vectra, it was only 12 years old and had 75k miles. As soon as the bloke came to the door he was trying to knock me down. Stick to a price and don't be beaten down especially if its a diesel with low mileage as they tend to hold their prices better in my experience.

We have also retired our horses and decided to sell our trailer ( kept the Landover as we tow a caravan)
We sold ours through a Facebook group that was specific to our model of trailer ( Sinclair owners group)
We were absolutely inundated with people interested and finally sold it to someone who lived around 30 miles away they viewed and bought straight away and we got our asking price.
We didn't fancy loads of people all over the property so told everyone else we would let them know if it didn't sell so ended up with only the one person viewing it.

Take your photos in a neutral place away from home and in an ideal world, do your viewings away from home as well. Then dodgy people can't scout you and your property out before planning to return later.

There's a Sinclair owner's group?? Why didn't I know this, I've got two of them!

If you don’t want the hassle then maybe try we buy any car, you won’t get as much but as least you won’t get scammed/messed around.

I sold a large towing car few years ago.Toyota Land Cruiser.
I had a garage do a mot , though it wasn’t due, and a service and check over and I got a report and then adverted the car on Autotrader and Local sites on FB.
I also got an offer off motorway, and priced the car at midway between the offer and what other cars like mine were going for on auto trader. I also spent £40 on a basic valet for it. It looked nice , I would have bought it myself had I been looking.
sold it to first woman who came to see it. She was happy with garage report, her husband took it for a drive with my son , and they offered £300 less than I asked. I sold it there and then.
had a message off her 3 months later saying she was really happy with it
