To cut a long story short, Due to problem after problem I have told my loaner I want to end my contract and pick my horse up giving her 4 weeks notice.

can anyone tell me if i meant to have written receipt or similar when I pick my mare up to say the loan has ended and I have received the tack and things listed in the contract?

what normally happens when a loan ends?

I've just given notice to my loanee. In the contract she has to return him to me and everything he went with was listed in the loan agreement so once hes home he's home. Different for me as I want her to always feel she can visit and ride him whenever she wants as she has been amazing and it's a very sad (but also exciting for me) time!

Have a look at your contract if you had one?

I wouldn't expect you to get a receipt but you might want to give one... If it were me I'd be taking a list with me anyway to make sure I didn't forget anything so once you've ticked off everything on it (don't forget passport) ypu could always sign that to say to loaner that they've given everything back?

No need to unless it is in contract though. If you gave notice in writing/by email or whatever and have a copy that should be enough to show loan has ended.

yes i have a contract but only states either party has to give x amount notice in writing, which i have,

so it's not standard/normal to write a receipt saying you received everything? just checking as this is the first loan i have leased out too.

but it's a good idea to have a check list,

When I returned my loan pony, we both brought our copies of the loan agreement, went through his list of possessions to ensure we were both happy & then ripped up both copies.
It was a very amicable arrangement though, she had ridden him several times at mine & was happy I was returning him better educated than he went.

thanks w1bbler that sounds a good idea. but maybe we're just sign both contract to say it's ended to keep for record.

Mmmm, I sense the loan has been a bit unsatisfactory? And the end of it is a bit stressy/contentious?

That being so, then yes I'd insist on an inventory to be signed so that there is a proper accounting of all your possessions which went on loan with the horse, which will also give some measure of "closure" to the unfortunate episode - also, if there have been problems, I'd be inclined to get someone independent to sign and witness that everything is returned and OK; also that the horse is in good condition without any injuries/blemishes etc which were not there when you sent it on loan. Get a vet to check if you are unsure or there is any doubt.

Also worth checking that all livery/farriery/vet fees have been fully accounted for (if the loaner has been responsible for this - which is normal). I had a nasty shock when I ended the loan of my boy - only to find that the person loaning him had paid sweet FA towards her livery from Day One and the YO was now expecting ME to be liable for it..........

Check your loan agreement (hopefully one is in place, please don't tell me not) which should list the kit the horse went with - and go from there.

But (edited) IF you are unhappy with the loan, the way the loaner is conducting themselves, and/or you are in ANY WAY concerned with the welfare of your horse, then stuff the months' notice - you just go get him back PDQ.
