Endo tapping?!

Can't view the link, as at work. Have read about this before though. If it is Endo Spink, then I seem to remember that there was some debate about whether the full or half tap was achieved by pulling the horses head round to an angle where they effectively cut off the ability to breathe - hence the horse lying down. Once the horse starts to go down, the tap is released and the horse sits quietly...

I'm clawing through my memory though, so I could be way off base with that.

My instinct is to be very suspicious of this though - although I am aware that horses can and have been properly trained to lie down on command.

JMHO

I looked, expecting Endo Spink, but it isn't. And it isn't his 'tap' either..... so worth a look if you can pick up the link.
Seems, in a way, a bit like other forms of training, like clicker, in that the horse learns a certain response to a certain stimulus. I can see that if you have a horse that will respond, and can train him in this way, it might be a useful 'tool' to have, but as with most training methods, only as good as the person doing them.

The video just shows a conditioned response same as any other type of training. We have to teach horses to respond to an aid. It's kind of irrelevant what the aid is.
http://www.youtube.com/user/endospink This is where to find Endo Spinks Tap
The Endo Spinks tap is supposed to dis-engage the flight reflex and put the horse into a submissive position and stop the cycle of them working themselves up into a blind panic. He doesn't advocate it for 'normal' horses the cases he has are extreme. Hos youtube channel makes interesting viewing, I hope I never get that desperate but I suppose in a situation where horses are so difficult that nothing else works and it's either that or cranial lead therapy it's worth a go. I'm not convinced by this idea of cutting off the airway, horses bend like that on their own to scratch etc and you don't see them spontaneously hitting the deck!

ajn1610 - Endospink training methods are brilliant. He is such a calm and kind rider. His videos make for great watching and he makes every situation look so simple - especially his agile mount!

One has to remember he is a seasoned respected professional at the top of his game.

That's the point I'm trying to make. Did it come over negative about Endo? It wasn't supposed to I think he's ace but obviously for 99.9% of horses his methods aren't necessary.

I just watched some of endo's videos, he certainly seems to have a brain.. and velcro johds.. I can't watch his tapping video though, apparently the music is copyrighted in this country (the UK) which is strange, since you all seem to be able to see it

Is lowering the head something that the horse is trained to do when tapped then? I got the impression that the horse naturally dropped its head when tapped in the video?
