just wondered if anyone on here competes in endurance competitions. just wondered if you could explain what they are like. im thinking of doing some on my horse. how do they calculate results? is it purely on time etc. what does it involve etc

any info greatly received

Hi,

we are competing in Endurance rides. If you and your horse are just starting out you can either join EGB straight away or do some rides as a day member, try before you buy. You will have to start at Novice level (or pleasure rides if you prefer). The novices rides are graded and go over various distances. You will have to ride within a set speed (min 8 kmh) and at the final vetting a grade is calculated depending on your ride time and your horse heart rate, so you compete against your self and don't race at the lower levels. You get some great offroad riding for your money in beautiful countryside, go for it, you'll have fun!

It is purely on time but your horse must pass the vet gates where a vet check's the horse out. On the pleasure rides you will normally get a rosette.

Lucy and i do endurance. The results for pleasure rides are done on speed there is a min and a max time allowance also the vet will see your horse trot up. As long as you are within the time and your horse is sound you will compleat the ride and get a rosette. If you do competative rides of 30km and over you will be seen by the vet at the stert of the ride he will take your horses hart rate and check it is sound. If you pass you then set off for your ride. There are min and max time limits on these rides to. Once you have compleated the ride you have 30mins to untack your horse and wash him off then you must report to the vet again. He will take your horses hart rate again and check for dehidration. Then he will watch him trot up. If you are within the time and your horse is sound with a heart rate below 64bpm you will get a compleation rosette. Also depending on your avarage speed and your heart rate you will get a grading ribbon which is to reward the fitter horses. Grade one is the highest down to grade 4. The longer rides of 55km or more have half way holds where the horse is checked by the vet again and you have a 20 - 30min break to let the horse (and you) rest.
It is a fantastic sport and enyone can do it and any horse can to as long as it's fit. Lucy and i started 5 years ago. She is now 20 and does rides of up to and inclu 80km. She normaly gets grade one with an avarage speed of 12kmp. She is a 13.2hh welsh type pony.

so you do get a rosette

and im guessing the better grades you get, you then move up in distance etc

it does sound fun, not sure whether horse will like it if she sees horse infront or one passes, she'll try and catch up or keep up

got fun ride planned for 6th dec so will see how that goes
