I'm hoping to compete my horse in a year or two, but in the mean time I'm doing PRs and NCRs. I thought it might be nice to go on a two day ride in a different part of the country, like having a little holiday with with my horse. Is it only serious competitors that do this and would they think I was nuts to mission miles away and stay away from home just to do a couple of NCRs, or is it a pretty normal thing to do? :o

Thanks

Of course. Why not - if you can afford it then go for it.

Doing a novice 32k competitive trail ride is pretty close to a PR if you wanted to compete.

I did my first one on my 5 year old, draft X when he was still unfit from chipping his knee. We came 2nd in our class:)

Ive just started PR's and NCR this year and have stayed over a couple of times when doing the 2 day events. They are just so well organised, and we have just had so much fun everytime.
Top tip if camping though, put your tent up before ride as I made that big mistake and hardly had the energy to bang in a tent peg!! :-)

Tent?

Lol - I'm too lazy for that. Either B&B or I sleep in the tailer;)

Im not doing the tent thing again either, was a complete nightmare, and the airbed was like a pancake before it had even got dark!!...
Ive now bought myself a deluxe campbed and im going to sleep in the trailer with a bowl of pot puri next to my head :-)

Thank you everybody. :)

I have a horsebox so wouldn't have to deal with tent issues, thankfully. :D I had visions of it only being for the hardcore riders and loads of endurance riders pointing and laughing at me for staying over and only doing the NCRs. I must be getting so paranoid, lol.

I'm only doing the shortest ride options this year, my little horse is only five and I just figure why rush him?

I'm only doing the NCR's this year with my 5 y.o but used to stay overnight a lot when I was doing the longer distances with my other horse.

Us "hardcore riders" as you put it would certainly not point fingers and laugh as we're a very friendly bunch! In fact, quite a few people go to the Lindum and do five days of NCR's. I would like to but I'm not sure I want to do consecutive days with my youngster yet although going to the Lindum is very tempting!!!

yes and try it, myself and three friends heading from Surrey to North Norfolk next weekend to so NCR both days that include beach section, we will camp in lorry or trailers and cook on lorry stove or head out for fish and chips or there is a BBQ on the Sat night, the horses will corral next to the lorry so you can see them all the time...bliss!!!....its a lovely way to have a horsey holiday and EGB people are very friendly to us non arab riding peeps!!

I don't travel that far for NCR's but did my first two day ride at Berkshire Downs last weekend (although we have previously stayed over at Scotland for the home international)- was great fun :D

endurance riders and crews are some of the most welcoming people you will meet, no matter what level you compete at !!

Go for it and I am sure you will have a great time :)

Loads of people at the Scottish Champs last year (including me!) were staying overnight to do PL on consecutive days. Seems perfectly normal to me! Just wish I hadn't been so sick at the time!

cheers Ester, Ive done it 3 times before but not for a few years and remember the ragfork warning before at the venue...really looking forward to it as everyone is so friendly...we got a mention the first year for being the slowest pair and eating magnum icecreams whilst leaving the beach area ...not sure we would ever make proper endurance riders then!!!...:)

Thanks for all the replies. Endurance people do seem really nice, but its always a bit of a worry with doing something new that all the serious people might be a bit miffed at me turning up and taking up room (not that I've any reason to assume there is a shortage of room, duh) when I'd just be there for a bit of a jolly. :D It doesn't sound like non-competitive riders are thought of that way, which is good, but I wanted to check before embarrassing myself or annoying everyone!

Ha ha! I thought ajb was you when I read your first post on this thread :) Well, 2 of us are going for the bunk accomodation :D

And to OP, endurance riders are definitely some of the friendliest riders going. I'm not a 'proper' endurance rider and have been on several NCR's. North Norfolk is my first 2 day one and will be travelling up from Kent. No doubt I won't make the minimum speed, and am now looking forward to icecreams on the beach :)
